Shedd Park is the largest of a network of small parks in the South Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago, making it an important stop for neighborhood dogs and their human friends to know about. Its best-known feature is its historic 1917 Fieldhouse designed in the Midwest region's iconic Prairie School style. The beautiful building has an indoor gymnasium and auditorium, and hosts a wide range of community events. It's available for rental by community members and groups needing a space for a class, a photo shoot, a meeting, or a performance. It also has bathrooms available for public access.
Shedd Park has many family-friendly outdoor features. Kids love the playground and splash park on hot summer day,s and parents can watch their children play baseball from the benches that have been installed all around the baseball field. There's also a basketball court and a walking track.
Though green space is limited, there's more than enough for a bathroom break and an enjoyable walk around the park's perimeter, which is covered with soft, rolling lawns. Mature trees provide shade and gently sloping hills lend varied landscapes to your walk. In addition to keeping your dog on a leash, remember to clean up after them using one of the park's trash cans. You'll need to bring your own waste bags and water.
Check Shedd Park's website and bulletin board to see if any outdoor events are scheduled that your dog could attend with you. Leashed dogs are welcome to all outdoor events in Chicago parks where they are otherwise allowed.
If you and your dog are in the neighborhood, stop by Shedd Park to make some friends and take a break from the hustle of urban life.
