A hiking extravaganza is waiting for you in the city of Sacramento, California! The American River Parkway is pup-friendly and a pawtastic way to spend some quality time with your fur-ever friend, and the choices of trails here are endless. This Parkway is a system of trails which meanders along the shoreline of the American River running through the city of Sacramento.
The main trailhead is accessible on 6th Avenue in West Sacramento, but there are many other options off of Highway 50. The American River Parkway offers 82 miles of trails within the 23-mile river system. The main trail follows the river and passes through many different area parks. These parks then offer other spur, loop and out-and-back trails as well.
There are dedicated paths which allow you to hike, bicycle, jog, or horse back ride! All of them are pup-friendly with Fido on leash. You will have the pleasure of hiking through suburban areas, commercial areas, and past local beaches. Plenty of picnic shelters are scattered throughout your excursion, as well as specially-placed benches which will offer your feet and pup’s paws a bit of a rest. The parkway trails are filled with diverse animals, plants and trees. You can even bring your pole and do some fishing from the banks of the river!
Shade can be found throughout and many of the trails are paved. You can even use this trail at night, although bicyclists must have a light to keep themselves visible. Some of the area trails are lit by lampposts. There are restroom facilities located throughout your hike, as well as areas to fill water bottles. Be sure to plan for the weather and pack appropriate season gear for you both.
Spend as much or as little time as you have on the American River Parkway. You will never run out of exciting trails to explore and things to do.
