The Felix Lake Nature Trail is located on the Tyndall Air Force Base, but thankfully, non-personnel are also allowed to use the recreational areas with a photo ID and a current recreational permit. If you intend to do any fishing or hunting on the property, make sure you have the required Florida State Licenses needed for those sports as well.
That being said, you and your fur buddy can enjoy the Florida sunshine and warm weather along the Felix Lake Nature Trail, which is about one and a half miles of paved path. While on the trail, you must keep your dog restrained on a leash and under your control at all times. Being so close to the base, you may not expect to see so much nature, but walking along this path will make you forget you're only 12 miles from Panama City. This is a puptastic hike for just about anyone as it is an easy walk on mostly level and paved ground. The area is lighted and open 24 hours a day, so you can hike at the right time for you and your pup.
There is an abundance of tall pines and aspens to keep you and Fido shaded on your furrific walk, and you will likely see quite a few colorful flowers such as tickseed, lilac, and lavender. If you and your pooch get lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of some of the furry wildlife that lives along the wooded trail such as whitetail deer, rabbits, squirrel, and many species of birds. Keep your pup leashed to ensure the safety them and all the critters in the area.
The short trail also takes you along Felix Lake, which provides great fishing for those who like to do so, and it has been reported that there are some huge bass and catfish in there. However, do not let Fido swim in the lake at any time. Be sure to being your own clean up bags, and water of course!
The Felix Lake Nature Trail will provide you and your little buddy a fun and scenic walk in the woods while keeping you close to town. Grab a leash and head on over to the Tyndall Air Force Base!
Dogs are not allowed in “Critical Wildlife Areas,” which are clearly marked. Beware of dangerous critters such as snakes and alligators.
