Description

The Presque Isle State Park, Pennsylvania's only “seashore,” attracts millions of visitors each year thanks to its gorgeous coastline and various recreational activities. One of the best ways to see this Fido-friendly, 3,200-acre gem is to go on the Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose Trail, a 13.5-mile paved path that circles the whole peninsula. Named for the late State Representative Karl Boyes, this ADA accessible trail is frequented by walkers, bikers, in-line skaters, and furry visitors. During the winter, hikers can use the plowed section from the entrance to the Public Safety Building, while snowshoers and cross-country skiers can enjoy the snow-covered part from the Public Safety Building to Perry Monument.

A designated National Recreation Trail, the Multi-Purpose Trail starts at the entrance and travels along the neck of the peninsula, with Presque Isle Bay to the east and Lake Erie to the west. As you and your pup make your way into the park, you'll find restrooms, picnic tables, and pavilions along the way. Since the park is a National Natural Landmark with several unique habitats, you'll likely spot birds and other wildlife as well. The trail runs next to roads throughout the peninsula, though some sections are separated from traffic by median strips or wooded areas. Mile markers are painted on the pavement to guide you on your journey.

If you and your pupper enjoy spending time at the beach, you're in luck—Presque Isle boasts 11 miles of sandy beaches, and four-legged friends are welcome to frolic in the sand and water in the unguarded areas. Dog parents are expected to keep a watchful eye on their pets at all times and clean up after them, so don't forget the waste bags at home! And while there are food concessions scattered around the park, it's always a good idea to bring water for you and your pooch. When it comes to exploring picturesque Presque Isle with Fido, there's no better choice than the Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose Trail!
