Schulze said he got the idea to train Lila to catch lobsters when he was out diving one day, catching lobsters himself. He thought of how Lila loves to catch toys and also loves to swim so the fit seemed natural. He started to work with Lila in his backyard, holding a toy underwater in a kiddie pool for her to retrieve. Lila seemed to be loving the game and the duo eventually took the skill to the ocean.
Lila jumped in the water off of Schultze's boat and caught a lobster on her first try! The trick had worked! Schultze then made the eight-minute video called How to Train Your Dog to Catch a Lobster which got tons of views. Lila was a star!
Since Lila's first debut online, Schultze has changed his company which is now 4Ocean, a company which helps clean up the oceans and shorelines in an attempt to keep them debris free. Lila has moved on to bigger and better things as well. Now, Lila is part of the 4Ocean team, working to collect plastic from the ocean floor in an effort to clean up the water. Most days, Lila suits up in a life vest with the 4Ocean logo and jumps into the water. She paddles around, dives down and picks up pieces of plastic and trash which she then puts in a recycling bin. Talk about talent! Her brightly colored vest ensures that Schultze and his team can keep an eye on her as she works (however, she still thinks she is playing!).
So far, Lila has helped the 4Ocean team clean up over 1 million pounds of plastic from the ocean. Pretty impressive for this energetic black Lab! While Lila's lobster days are over (Schultze was actually fined for catching lobsters without a license, meaning he is hesitant to jump in himself as well), she has certainly found her calling and loves her new job. We should all thank Lila for her efforts in helping keep the ocean clean!
