Introduction

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the first book in the five book trilogy (yes, you read that right) written by Douglas Adams before his death in 2001, with the sixth addition to the trilogy penned by Eoin Colfer of Artemis Fowl fame in 2008. The book and the series center around the hapless Arthur Dent, a human of the digital watch wearing variety, and his friend Ford Prefect. Up until the events in the story, Arthur had believed his friend to be from Guildford, but Ford actually grew up on a small planet near Betelgeuse and he rescues Arthur from Earth just as it is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. The novel was first published in 1979 and has spawned several short stories, audiobook translations, and stage, radio, and television shows as well as a big screen adaption featuring Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent and Mos Def as Ford Prefect. Fans of this great series of books will have fun considering a name for their pet.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Dog Name Considerations

Choosing a name for your dog can be a big responsibility and while a poor name for your dog is unlikely to affect their self-esteem with other dogs, it can affect their bond with you as well as their training and performance. A good name is one that you and your family are comfortable saying and hearing multiple times a day and one that your dog responds easily to. Many of the names on this list, such as Arthur, Petunia, and Marvin, are familiar names and may not reveal their origins without a little explanation, whereas others, like Zaphod, Trillian, and Forty-two, are obvious references to the movie. If you are looking for a name that is a little bit more exotic, names like Lazlar, Magrathea, or Kria may fit the bill. Your dog’s personality is also likely to affect your choice of name; there are names for competitive or combative dogs on this list, like Vogon and Krikkit, or smart dogs, who might be more aptly dubbed Marvin, Trillian, or Hooloovoo. Even high-spirited party dogs have a place in the Hitchhiker’s universe with names like Ford or Dentrassi, and if you have a whole pack of party dogs you could name them after some of the ingredients of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster with names like Janx, Hypermint, Fallia, and Olive. Then train… but... very carefully…
