What is the terrain like in Egger Highlands?
Egger Highlands is situated on the south side of the San Diego Bay and has a natural area with wetlands and the Otay River running through this northern area. The Tijuana River Open Country Preserve is located on the community’s south side, Saturn Boulevard and Interstate 5 are on the east side, and there is an irregular western border around 15 Street.
Most of the area is flat and dog walkers and their pets do not have steep hills to walk up and down. Dwellings in the area are mostly moderately sized single-family homes. Private properties are well landscaped with traditional deciduous trees and palm trees, lawns, and drought-tolerant plantings.
Some streets have separate sidewalks for dog walkers and their pets, however, some residential streets do not. Where walkways are not present, walk with your pup facing oncoming vehicles on the right side of the road and keep your pooch securely leashed to avoid traffic.
How many greenways are there in Egger Highlands?
The south side of Egger Highlands is the location of the Tijuana River County Open Space Preserve. This large greenway occupies 1,800 acres and contains forests, native sage scrub, high mesas, and river valley. The Tijuana River runs through the preserve which is home to a large trail system with 22.5 miles of interconnecting trails. Some trails are well surfaced with few elevations changes running along the valley while others will involve steep hikes up rough terrain. There is also a bird and butterfly garden in the park along with recreational facilities and fields.
The South Bay Community Park provides a more manicured artificial park with a recreation center, lawns, and paved walking paths. This park is located more centrally and is easier to access on foot for a quick local stroll with you pup.
On the north side, near the bay and wildlife preserves, is the Bayshore Bikeway, also called the Silver Strand bikeway. This is a rail corridor where you can walk your leashed canine companion.
