Wag! Walkers know Sorrento Valley

Sorrento Valley is a neighborhood of northern San Diego, located a 30-minute commute from the central business district of the city. Much of the neighborhood is light industrial and commercial with plenty of businesses and offices within walking distance.

Several local eateries advertise that they allow dogs to join their owners on their outdoor seating venues. Dog-friendly restaurants in the area include Wich Addiction, Naseem's Bakery and Kabob, The Lunch Brunch Cafe, Punjabi Tandoor, Greenspot Salad Company, and Starbucks.

San Diego has lovely weather for enjoying an outdoor meal with your pup and a stroll around the district. Winters are mild with temperatures well above freezing and a light jacket will usually suffice for daily excursions. Summers can be very hot and you may want to take your dog out earlier or later in the day to avoid extreme heat. Spring sees some overcast and rainy weather but is still warm, so a light rain jacket will keep you dry.

What is the terrain like in Sorrento Valley?

Much of Sorrento Valley is made up of commercial areas with light industrial and retail activity. The commercial areas are not well landscaped and shade trees are sparse. There are three residential developments in the area that are home to 500 residents.

Dwellings in the region consist of single-family detached homes and condominium complexes. Residential sections have landscaping with yards and gardens. The area is bordered on its north and south side by natural canyons and wilderness areas, on the west by an interstate, and on the east by Camino Santa Fe Road. A cemetery is located on the south side and provides manicured green space.

The topography of the area is hilly and you and your dog will need to navigate some elevation changes when traveling in the region. There are sidewalks in both residential and commercial districts that provide safe, separate pedestrian ways for you to walk with your dog as traffic in the commercial areas can be heavy.

How many greenways are there in Sorrento Valley?

There are two large natural areas bordering Sorrento Valley with nature trails to explore with your dog. Carroll Canyon is located on the south side of the community and has some natural vegetation and dirt trails. The larger Los Penasquitos Creek Canyon is located on the north side. The Los Penasquitos Canyon Trail runs for 6.8 miles and is very popular with cyclists and hikers. The trails feature a waterfall and are accessible to hikers and hounds of most ability levels. The trail is subject to flooding during wet weather and may be closed if the conditions become treacherous.

Torrey Hills Dog Park is located to the north of Sorrento Valley with a 13-minute drive. This enclosed off-leash dog park is spacious and has water fountains for your dog to rehydrate on hot days. This is a great dog park for your pooch to play loose and socialize. You must supervise your pet and be prepared to clean up after them at all times.
