Wag! Walkers know Old Lake Highlands
Bordered by Lake Highlands Drive, Northwest Highway, and White Rock Lake sits the 70-year-old neighborhood of Old Lake Highlands. Proving the saying an “oldie but a goodie” is no lie as this comfortable neighborhood is a pet lover's paradise. Old growth trees and sidewalks galore make walking with our dogs like a smooth Sunday drive.
Our furry friends are part of the family here and the Old Highlands PetWatch Program helps keep them safe. A registry for local pets, as well as services for education, pet welfare, and responsible pet ownership is among the focus of the OLH PetWatch.
Although, mostly a residential area, you will find one great restaurant with dog-friendly outdoor seating. Rockfish Seafood Grill on Mockingbird sits at the very northwest edge of the neighborhood but waits to welcome you and your pup. As always, watch the Texas heat in the summer, carry water with you, and protect both you and your dog from sunburn!
What is the terrain like in Old Lake Highlands?
Old Lake Highlands has the distinction of having one of the highest elevations in the Dallas area, making the beautiful skyline of downtown Dallas come alive. Also boasting one of the few rolling hill terrains, Old Lake Highlands is a nice mix of artificial and natural terrain. You and your pup can have a good workout or a leisurely stroll depending on where you start and which way you go. A good idea might be to preview your route to make sure older pups don't get worn out if the walk becomes too vigorous. The neighborhood provides sidewalks in the residential parts and some excellent nature trails toward the northwest edge.
Pedestrian traffic will be neighborly, so stop and say hi and let the pups get acquainted if you pass by a fellow dog walker! There are a few busier streets that surround the neighborhood but following pedestrian traffic laws should keep you and your pup safe.
How many greenways are there in Old Lake Highlands?
Green is in and all around Old Lake Highlands! You and your furry friend can find some nice green space at Norbuck Park at the intersection of Buckner and Northwest Highway. Dating back to 1929, Norbuck Park is a 100-acre park with tons of amenities. Huge open green fields, pavilions for shade cover, old-growth trees alongside wide walking paths, and nature trails around and through make the park a great on-leash experience for you and your canine companion.
Lake Highlands Park and the Dixon Branch Greenbelt Park both sit just across E. Lake Highlands Drive. Both parks offer plenty of green space, old growth, and comfortable park atmospheres. You can find more of a trail experience to the west where White Rock Lake borders the neighborhood. Smaller green spaces are scattered through the area but be careful that they are not attached to the very popular school district as dogs may not be welcomed on some school grounds.
