Undoubtedly, the curious nature of the Bloodhound and the dog's ability to pick up a scent make this one of the most magnificent breeds in the world for tracking. A dog by the name of Nick Carter was credited as being the best tracker in the world. The Bloodhound puppy was born in 1899 in Kentucky. His handler, Captain G.V. Mullikin, reared and trained the young pup into a tracking celebrity. People would turn out in large crowds to watch the duo perform. 

Nick Carter made 650 finds. He helped put 126 criminals into jail. His record remains the most impressive tracking success story in history. This amazing dog had the unique and skilled ability to track even a cold scent trail. One time, he followed the scent for an incredible 55 miles without wavering. 

In 1909, Nick Carter and his handler Mullikin were dispatched to the site of a fire that was firmly believed to have been arson. The explosion had occurred at least a 100 hours before the team arrived on the scene. Most people were skeptical that Nick could even pick up a scent from the burned debris. However, when Nick came, he immediately put his nose to the ground and started to scent the charred ruins. All of a sudden, the dog picked up a scent. He quickly lifted his tail and headed off to track the trail. Nick led his handler to an old farmhouse located about a mile away from the fire sight. Within the farmhouse, was the arsonist who had set the blaze. The law enforcement officials were able to arrest the criminal thanks to Nick's hard work. 

Nick would track for another year, until 1910, when his legs gave out. He was allowed to retire, but he died a short time later. Nick's handler trained two more bloodhounds and went on to help apprehend 2,500 criminals through the skilled and hard work of his bloodhound companions. 

The illustrious career of Nick Carter remains unbeaten even though many dogs have come close in the last hundred years. Nick Carter had a curious nature and dogged determination that pushed him to astonishing tracking excellence. The Bloodhound lived to follow a trail even if it meant pushing his body for miles. He would never get up until he found what he was seeking.
