Dog Names Meaning Magic

It is only natural that cats occupy most of the magic scene limelight when it comes to pop culture magic.  However, several dogs have also found their way in as well.  From dogs named Friday to dogs named Shadow, several have enjoyed magic names, but of all the dogs with names that mean magic or are inspired by magic, the Harry Potter series has introduced several dogs over the numerous books and film adaptions including Hagrid's beloved Fang and a three-headed Cerberus dog ironically named Fluffy.  

Fang is a large boarhound who, despite his large size, is a well-known coward.  Fang is also a heavy slobberer and often gets Hagrid's guest fully drenched in smelly dog slobber.  The breed of Fang in the books is described as a Great Dane, but the movies portray Fang as a Neapolitan Mastiff with a black coat.  Fang accompanied Harry and the other characters of the Harry Potter series on several adventures but usually ran away out of fear and cowardice, which also signaled to Harry's allies that he was in trouble.  Fang as a name may not instantly invoke visions of magic, but the name has since come to be closely associated with all things magical and fantastic thanks to this large, friendly pooch.

Unlike Fang, the three-headed dog named Fluffy in the Harry Potter series is far from a coward.  Fluffy is a Cerberus, which is also a mythical creature.  In Greek mythology, Cerberus is the Hound of Hades that guards the gates to the Underworld.  In Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, Fluffy the three-headed hound guards the chamber containing the Philosopher's Stone.  Hagrid took care of Fluffy during the dog's time at Hogwart's and maintained that Fluffy was acquired from a Greek chappie, thus, tying Fluffy to the three-headed Cerberus of ancient Greece.  As vicious, strong, and fierce as Fluffy is, he has a major weakness for the lulling notes of music.  While on guard at the Philosopher's Stone, Fluffy does not seem to sleep much unless someone is playing music.  Hagrid accidentally tells Professor Quirrell how to get by Fluffy, thus opening the Philosopher's Stone to theft.  However, Harry and the gang also know how to get past the giant dog.  When the trio finds an enchanted harp playing for Fluffy, they know the Philosopher's Stone is in danger of theft.  Playing the flute for the vicious dog, the three friends can get by Fluffy and move on with their quest.  Fluffy was temporarily released into the Forbidden Forest once his guard dog duties were no longer needed.  Later on, Fluffy was returned to his native country of Greece to live out his life in peace and freedom.
