Introduction

Many moons ago, at an early 1990's comic convention, a comic artist by the name of Mike Mignola was struck with an irresistible urge to draw on a piece of paper. Mr. Mignola drew a large, horned demonic character with a vulture perched on his shoulder and a large belt fastened around his waist. The belt itself was adorned with numerous occult items such as skulls and chains. Inscribed, in arcane letters, on the center of the belt was two words; "Hell Boy." At the time, Mr. Mignola had no plans to develop the character into the snarky, lovable icon that he would eventually become. But when he was struck with the urge to start a creator-owned comic series, Mr. Mignola revisited and revamped the concept he created so that could give readers one Hell of a hero.

Featured Famous Hellboy Dog

Enkeladite

Enkeladite isn't technically the name of our featured famous Hellboy dog; rather it's the name of a mysterious substance that transformed our dog of the hour into a gigantic mutant death hound. Since no official name was given to the creature, we decided to name it after the material that changed from a normal dog into a bonafide paranormal threat. So going forward, Enkeladite with a capital "E" will be the name we use when we're referencing the monstrous hound from the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. miniseries. When you see enkeladite with a lower case "e," that will be in reference to the mystery material that caused all of the ruckus in the Beyond the Fences arc. Enkeladite = giant hellhound, enkeladite = magic mutagen. Get it? Got it? Great!

Our story starts in the 1950s. Being one part human and one part demon, Hellboy has an incredibly long lifespan that has allowed him to personally experience a number of major historical events. Hellboy also doesn't really physically age much, so he essentially looked exactly the same in the 1950s as he did in the early 2000s. Anyhow, Hellboy and a BPRD agent by the name of Susan Xiang visit a suburb in order to respond to local claims of a monstrous beast hounding after the neighborhood children.

At first, everything seems perfectly fine; Susan and Hellboy don't initially encounter anything otherworldly, giving them some time to get familiar with the locals and bond with them a bit. For a while, both Hellboy and Susan are truly mystified as to how such an idyllic place could ever evoke the ire of something so horrible and twisted. Soon enough, the two BPRD agents learn what horrors the local residents have been dealing with when they come face to face with Enkeladite. The horrendous hound gives both Hellboy and Susan a run for their money, attacking and evading them on multiple occasions. They're eventually able to corner the monster, only for the beast to disintegrate right before their eyes.

We then learn that the monster was previously a simple dog that lived around the neighborhood who was affected by a mysterious substance called "enkeladite:" Not all of the questions raised in the story are answered outright by the end of the Beyond the Fences arc but Hellboy and Susan were at least able to help the residents of the quaint suburban area.

Beyond this dog, Bruiser the Rottweiler also played a minor role in B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth - Gods #1. Alongside his human companion Fenix Espejo, Bruiser helps the BPRD deal with an otherworldly and ungodly threat from Hellboy's past.

Hellboy Inspired Dog Name Considerations

Once upon a time, Hellboy used to be a fairly obscure comic series that was only read by the most esoteric of comic fans. Thanks in large part to the two films directed by the Oscar Winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, the Hellboy universe has gained a great deal of much needed exposure over the years. These days, millions of people know of the character and his infamously wry sense of humor. It's actually that, Hellboy's ginormous Right Hand of Doom, and his defiantly heroic nature that standout as the character's most defining traits. If you're a big fan of characters with "never say die" attitudes and heaps of witty one liners, then you'll love Hellboy and the other members of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

A myriad of figures from pantheons and mythological indexes the world over also feature in the Hellboy series as both major and minor characters. By his own admission, Mike Mignola is something of a history and mythology buff. Combine that love for history and world myth with a deep admiration for pulp storytelling and you get Hellboy. If you share some of Mr. Mignola's interests, then you may want to consider naming your dog after a Hellboy character - both to pay homage to the series and to potentially pay homage to world mythology.
