In the 1940’s when Charles M. Schultz was first creating his comic strip, he dubbed it L'il Folks, typically signing his work with his family nickname, Sparky. Due to concerns about copyright infringement possibilities with the 1930s cartoon Little Folks by Tack Knight, the name of the strip was changed to Peanuts before publication. While Schultz may not have been fond of the name that was given to his creation, it did turn out to be a fantastic name for a little rescued dog in Michigan. Peanut is believed to be a Beagle mix dog, much like Snoopy in the comic strip and the inspiration for Snoopy, Spike, and many family dogs from Charles M. Schultz’s childhood. When Peanut the dog was first found, she was in bad shape. She had a belly full of carpet, along with broken ribs and two broken legs, injuries that had all been sustained at different times. The Delta Animal Center in Escanaba, MI refused to give up on her and the little dog was given treatment for her injuries as well as time to recuperate before being given the moniker Petunia and being put up for adoption. She was quickly adopted out to a new loving family who gave her the name Peanut and plenty of love and attention.

Peanut proved to be a normally shy and retiring canine, so her owners were shocked at her behavior when she started running up and down the stairs barking and yelping one cold morning, frantically demanding to be let outside. When her new owner opened the door to let the dog out she tore out of the house and ran straight for an empty field that sat behind their house. Peanut’s new owner was perplexed but followed the dog to a ditch on the property where a three-year-old girl was huddled up, naked and shivering. The man took off his sweatshirt, wrapped the little girl in it and brought her in out of the cold, then called 911. When police and ambulance crews arrived at the house, they determined that the girl was uninjured and transported her to a nearby hospital for testing, then began searching for her parents. Deputies located her parents and another young girl at a nearby house in what was described as unsafe and unsanitary living conditions where Child Protective Service agents were able to remove the children from the untenable situation. Peanut, once rescued herself, had rescued the little girl.
