Jackson Heights is in the northwest section of Queens and borders Woodside to the West, Elmhurst to the south, and North Corona to the east. In the 1850s, John C. Jackson once built a road across the area that is now Jackson Heights. While this road has since been renamed, the neighborhood takes its name from the old road and it's builder.
While this area is no higher than anywhere else in this part of New York, it was named Jackson Heights in order to give an indication of exclusivity when the neighborhood was planned and developed in the early 1900s. The goal of this community was to provide city residents with a more natural environment in which to live while still remaining near to the heart of the city. Most of this neighborhood is considered historic and is composed of some of the original ornate apartment buildings built in the area.
What is the terrain like in Jackson Heights?
The walk through Jackson Heights is very interesting with lots of diversity in architecture despite its relatively flat terrain. It is not at all unusual to see a historic Victorian style home sitting next to a business and across the street from an apartment building. This makes for a varied and interesting walk, especially if you are curious about the history and culture of the area. Lots of mature trees make this a shady and pleasant walk as well. There is a good sidewalk on both sides of the road, but it is not divided from the street and because most homes sit close to the road or have fenced yards, you will need to walk your dog close to your side.
In order to get some variety from the city streets, you can head towards Flushing Bay which is about 10 blocks from the perimeter of Jackson Heights and provides some diversity to your daily walk.
How many greenways are there in Jackson Heights?
This neighborhood was originally built with the goal of creating more green space within a city environment, but most of this green space is not accessible to people walking on the street. There are some regional parks, however, to give you some relief. Several green spaces clustered around the LaGuardia Landing Lights in the north part of the neighborhood are a great place to play a game of on-leash fetch or frisbee with your dog. The northern playground towards the east side is also a good place to stretch your legs under some tree cover.
For more natural exploration, you can head towards Flushing Bay and the Promenade which runs along the water. Southeast from the bay, you can find Flushing Meadows Corona Park. This huge park covers acres and has lots of sports fields as well as tree-covered areas and wide grassy expanses. Meadow Lake is a lovely place to stroll around and Willowlake offers a large shoreline.
