What is the terrain like in Jamaica?
You will not find much in the way of hills any place in New York, but there are a few small ridges in and around Jamaica, especially to the north in Jamaica Hills. None of these areas has any serious elevations and will not cause any problems for beginning or limited walkers. Most of the walking through the neighborhood is on city sidewalks and there are several highways and busy streets to be aware of when you are walking in this populated area. Jamaica is bordered on two sides by highways, interstate 678 the Van Wyck Expressway and state route 25, and it is adjacent to JFK airport. The area can be congested, making it important to watch for traffic. There are plenty of quieter neighborhoods, however, and if city walking is not your favorite idea, there are a few parks you can take your dog to in and around the area.

As New York City neighborhoods go, Jamaica is a bit short on greenways, but don’t let this deter you. New York is well known for its large number of parks and other greenways, so if the small park down the street does not suit you, a short drive away you are likely to find some better alternatives. St. Alban Park is the only greenway in the Jamaica neighborhood suitable for taking your dog to. Just to the north in Jamaica Hills is a nine-acre park with a pond and walking trail Called Captain Tilly Park. A bit farther to the north, if you want to hop in your car, you will find Cunningham Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park, both of which offer plenty of walking, lots of green areas, and pet-friendly areas where you are able to let your dog off the leash for a run. Finally, about 4 miles away is Forest Park, 165-acres including two areas for your dog to run and plenty of trees, grass, and hiking trails.
