Introduction

When it comes to designer dogs, the Chiweenie is perhaps one of the most adorable breeds that you will ever come across. This comes as no surprise given that the Chiweenie is a hybrid of the Chihuahua and the Dachshund, two of the most endearing and wonderful dog breeds at present. Originating in 1990, the Chiweenie has not been around for that long. However, because of their charm, they have already established themselves as a popular choice for a companion and lap dog. A big personality trapped in a little body, Chiweenies are tiny balls of energy that crave a lot of attention and love.

Activity description

For a breed like the Chiweenie, which requires moderate activity, indoor games are more than enough to keep them happy and stimulated, whether physically or mentally. A good indoor game that will pique your dog’s curiosity and can get them moving is the “find the treat” game. A simple but effective activity for a Chiweenie, this game simply involves you hiding your dog’s favorite treat around the home and encouraging your pooch to find (and eat!) the treats. It’s a rewarding activity that will get your dog’s butt moving while also stimulating their minds and sense of smell. The best part is that you need not leave your house for this activity.

Step
1
Attract your dog's attention
To start playing the game, you first have to draw your dog’s attention to the treat. To do this, take the piece of treat and call out your dog’s name. Once you have your pooch’s full attention, wave the treat around and throw it some distance away. Watch if your dog goes after the treat or not. Do this repeatedly until your dog understands that you want to play.
Step
2
Toss and hide the treat
When your dog gets the hang of it, toss multiple treats all over the room. This will keep your dog alert and moving as they try to get from one feed to another. You can even make things more challenging by commanding your Chiweenie to stay while you go into another room to hide the treats. This activity is not only filling (since you’re feeding your dog the whole time), it is also fulfilling and positively reinforcing.

Flirt pole
Activity description

Dogs have a natural knack for chasing stuff around, especially ones that are new to their sights. Another simple but helpful game that you can play with your Chiweenie is the flirt pole game. The flirt pole, also known as a flirt stick, is a popular piece of exercise toy that is used to get a dog’s attention and get them chasing the lure or bait. It is an effective activity that can get a Chiweenie moving out and about, making it a great form of physical and mental situation. It also takes little effort on your end as the game can be played either indoors or outdoors.

Step
1
Acquire a flirt pole
The flirt pole is a toy that is popular among dog owners, which is why it is easy for you to get them in just about any pet store for a cheap price. However, if you want to save some bucks and would much rather create your own flirt pole, it is quite easy to do so. All you need is a PVC pipe, a string or yarn and a toy or plastic bag. Tape the string on to the pipe and attach the plastic bag or toy on the string’s other end.
Step
2
Get your dog playing
Once you have a flirt pole, bring your Chiweenie to a spacious area such as your backyard. Then, call out your dog’s name as you wave the flirt pole around to get their attention. Once your pooch is interested, start moving the pole around. Run, make turns, go in circles and just make things more challenging for your dog. However, don’t forget to let your pooch “win” every now and then. Also, give a treat as both a reward and motivation for your dog to keep playing.

Activity description

Because of their small size, Chiweenies are easy to carry and bring around with you. This is one of the top reasons why the breed is so popular with individuals who like to travel and go on adventures. Even though the Chiweenie has an active personality, they are well-behaved during car rides or flights and can be really quiet during these trips. This is because not only do they find it exciting to be on the move, they also appreciate not being left behind at home and spending time with their owners. If you want a travel buddy for an epic road trip, then the Chiweenie is the perfect choice for a companion.

Step
1
Do some planning
When going on a road trip, especially with your dog, you can’t go in blind. In fact, thorough planning is the key to a fun and successful trip. Firstly, you need to determine how long your trip will be; will this be a short day trip or will it be a lengthy one? You also need to plan out which routes you are going to take and the stops you will make in between. Finally, and more importantly, you need to check for destinations that are dog-friendly.
Step
2
Head on out on the road
Once you have things planned out, pack for yourself and your pooch accordingly. You need to bring the essentials such as enough food, water, a leash, collapsible bowl and some toys for entertainment. You should also bring a first aid kit in case of emergency. Waste bags are also a must, especially if you plan to have many stops. Then, head on out to your planned destinations. Make sure your dog is comfortable in the car and don’t forget to stop for bathroom breaks and to take in some of the surrounding views.

Obedience Training

Even with their small size, the Chiweenie is quite spirited and can be stubborn, largely inherited from the Chihuahua parent. When it comes to training the Chiweenie, you might need to seek the help of professionals. Enroll in a local club or hire a professional trainer to teach your pooch basic and more advanced obedience commands.

Siesta Time

For a pet dog, the Chiweenie is generally a low-maintenance breed. In fact, a little bit of grooming and exercise is all that’s needed to keep this breed happy and healthy. Outside of these tasks, what your pooch will appreciate the most is some time spent with you. Since they make for wonderful lap dogs, Chiweenies are the perfect cuddle buddy when you want to nap or relax on your couch.

Conclusion

A small, adorable designer dog, the Chiweenie has won the hearts of many dog lovers and enthusiasts because of their friendly and affectionate personality. The breed can fit anywhere but is most ideal for single people who live in an apartment or condo or those who like to travel and move around, given the dog’s compact size.Â
