When thinking about dog parks, you may automatically think of places outside. However, there are actual indoor dog parks as well! Indoor dog parks are the perfect place to go when it is cold outside in New York. Not only can your dog run around freely but there is sure to be other pups there as well for your dog to play with! New smells, new friends and a chance to get out of the house but also stay out of the cold - sign me and my pup up for this activity, as it sounds like the perfect solution to a chilly day!

Step
1
Scout it
Find an indoor dog park nearby and check the reviews online. There are some indoor dog parks that may not be the most sanitary (it is hard to clean up after hundreds of dogs inside) so find a dog park with good reviews. Check out pictures as well to find an indoor dog park that looks fun.
Step
2
Up To date
Make sure your dog is up to date on all of their shots and medicines. Many indoor dog parks will require you to show your doc documents before being allowed to play. This is great though, as you now know all the dogs in the park are also caught up on their vaccines!
Step
3
Play time
Play as long as your dog likes! Your pup is sure to be happy to be out of the cold and able to run around with some fellow dogs. Play just as you would at an outdoor dog park - fetch, chase, tug of war…anything will be fun! All this activity will also warm you up for a cold walk back home!

Did you know that there are bakeries and coffee shops just for dogs? Well now you do! New York is home to several dog bakeries which not only cater to dogs by making dog friendly treats, but they also let dogs inside to play, relax or pick out their favorite cookie from the display case! A dog bakery is a great place to go and hang out when it's cold. Maybe you can get a doggy mocha latte while you are there to warm you up even more!  Bring a book and make a day of the visit with your dog just as you would any coffee shop in New York.

Step
1
Sniff out a location
Locate a dog bakery near you. This can be a bakery that exclusively makes dog treats or it can simply be a bakery or coffee shop that allows dogs to come in and relax. Whichever bakery looks good to you, head on over to the location and get ready for a toasty warm visit inside with your pup.
Step
2
Order up
Order something from the bakery menu for you and, most importantly, order something for your dog as well! Homemade dog treats are sure to make your pup happy so pick one you think they will like. Grab a table and get ready to indulge and relax with your dog!
Step
3
Relax
Enjoy your time inside, out of the cold, with your pup. You can read a book, stare out the window or mindlessly pet your pooch while hanging out in the doggy bakery. Greet other friendly dogs as you all know you are there for the same reason - a dog cookie and to get out of the cold! You may find a potential new canine pal to meet up with on a nice day at the dog park.

Who says that swimming has to be for summer months only? Not us! And many indoor pools in New York agree - swimming should be for anytime and also for anyone - including your dog! There are a surprising number of pools in New York that allow dogs to swim. Some pools are exclusively for dogs while others let dogs and their owners swim. Whichever option you prefer, you will find a pool in New York to fit your needs! So don't pack up that bathing suit just because it is winter, there is an indoor doggy pool just waiting for you and your pup in New York.

Step
1
Find a pool
Find an indoor dog pool near you and be sure to check the reviews online before you go - some indoor dog pools are definitely better than others. However, there are many great locations as well! Head over to your perfect pool destination along with your pup and get ready to swim on a cold day!
Step
2
Swim
Let your dog get their paws wet first and watch as they dive right in or hesitate near the edge of the pool. The dog who jumps right in needs no more help but the cautious dog may need some coaxing from you - help your pup not be scared and start to enjoy the water.
Step
3
Shake
Swim and doggy paddle all day! Your dog is sure to love the chance to get out some extra energy after being inside, away from the cold, for a while. When your pup is ready to get out, don't forget to dry them with a towel, you don't want to get soaked by the dreaded wet dog shake!

Cold Walks

Just because it is cold doesn't mean you are stuck inside. Bundle up and then head out into New York for a nice winter walk. A brisk walk is fun for pup and parent alike!

Day at Home

While this activity isn't specific to New York, it can be nice to just stay home and not leave when the weather gets particularly cold. Your dog may also enjoy a day at home with you.

Conclusion

Since New York is cold about half of the year (thanks Northern states!), you will definitely need to find activities that you can do with your dog despite the frigid temperatures. Luckily, New York is full of things to do and you will never need to search for an activity for long! So pick an indoor adventure or brave the cold weather while wearing lots of layers. Don't worry, the cold won't last forever….we hope!
