Activity description

Serbian Hounds are well known as scent hounds, meaning that they use scent, rather than sight to hunt. They are, generally speaking, hunting dogs, used for centuries in the Balkan area in the age-old practice of chasing rabbits, pheasants, foxes, and various other animals for both food and protection of livestock. Many hunters use Serbian Hounds even when hunting larger game such as deer and boar, and these doggos have proven themselves worthy in such ventures. However, you don’t have to be a hunter to play a scent game with your dog. All you need is some delicious food with an intoxicating scent, your doggo’s nose, and some creativity to have the best day ever!

Step
1
Smell-off
First of all, after picking your food of choice, let your dog smell the treat to get familiar with the scent. They will sniff out the distinct aroma of the tasty snack you are about to hide and get excited to find it. Bonus points if you choose a snack that your pup has never had before, it will make the game more challenging and exhilarating!
Step
2
Hide it
Next, it is time to get creative and hide the snacks. If you have a big backyard, this task can be even more interesting. You can hide the food in the bushes, cover it with some loose leaves somewhere deep in the yard, sneak it among the flowers, and stash it in the nooks and crannies around the house.
Step
3
Release the Kraken
Finally, release your eager doggo and let them find the delicious treat! They will run around, sniff each corner of the backyard, maybe even dig a hole if you have decided to bury the gift! Once they found them all, they will bask in the glory of being the best tracker in the whole wide world!

Activity description

Another way to engage your Serbian Hound’s fantastic olfactory senses is to play a little game of seeking. Not hide and seek per se, but something similar to it. Your dog probably has a toy that they don’t care too much about. Instead of trashing it, you can use it in a new and exciting game of scent trailing. When the actual smell is considered, you don’t have to smear food all over the toy; you can use essential oils such as anise, valerian, or lavender, to tickle your dog’s interest and tracking instincts. Just make sure that the oil you are using is dog-safe and it will not cause allergies or other health issues.

Step
1
Perfume it!
The first step is actually to get the essential oil on the toy. Use a few drops to make the old toy smell divine and play with it for a few days before planning your colossal game of tracking. Your dog should get familiar with the scent, and if you offer a tasty treat after they have played with it, it will incentivize them to pay more attention to the forgotten toy.
Step
2
Hide it
Next, after a few days of getting to know the scent in question, hide the toy. You can do this in the house or outdoors, entirely up to you. Get creative with the hiding, don’t just let the toy lie around under the sofa chair or behind the tree. Make the game challenging, and it will be more fun!
Step
3
Track!
Leave a scented trail some 20 to 30 feet away from the hidden toy. Think of it as a trail of breadcrumbs from the fairytales. You can use little pieces of toilet paper to form a path to the reward, the hidden toy! Include a lot of praise when your doggo figures out that they are supposed to follow the paper breadcrumbs and give them a sweet treat when they find the toy!

Activity description

A rainy day can be quite dull, especially for an active doggo such as the Serbian Hound. However, you don’t have to be bored out of your mind even in bad weather. If going outside is not an option, except for pee breaks, having a bit of fun inside is your only option! You don’t have to sit around and force your dog to watch hours of documentaries they don’t care about; you can make the day entertaining for the both of you by setting up an obstacle course right in your home! Get up from the sofa, move some furniture, and prepare for a day of laughs with your beloved hound.

Step
1
Set up the course
First off, plan how to set up your obstacle course. Use the furniture you have in your apartment or house and move it around to create a polygon for fun! Tip the table over to the side, move some chairs around, create a tunnel out of cushions, and use tin foil to make hoops.
Step
2
Ready, set, go!
Once you have your course set up, place small treats in strategic places and release your doggo! They will crawl, jump, and squeeze through the obstacles, retrieve the treats, and have metric tons of fun with you! You can also follow them and try to get through all the obstacles too!

More Fun Ideas...

Pick a Hand

Take a delicious treat and put it in your hand. Make sure your dog knows you have it. Move your hands around and switch the treats between hands behind your back. Then make them guess where the treat is.

Hide the Dinner

To spice things up at dinner time, take your dog’s bowl and put it somewhere else, somewhere where it never usually is. Then, ask your dog where their dinner is. They will have fun searching for their food which will taste a hundred times better when they finally find it!

Conclusion

Serbian Hounds are precious dogs who love their owners more than life itself. Since they require a lot of activity, they are perfect for people who love the great outdoors and for people who enjoy spending a lot of time with their pets. Being a proud owner of a Serbian Hound is a rewarding experience, as they will surely be able to help you locate those car keys you always keep losing, as long as you smear some bacon on them before they go missing!
