Wag! Walkers know Sierra Sunset

Sierra Sunset is a residential community located on the far west side of Yuma, Arizona. There is a high school, recreational complex, and aquatic center located on the east side of the community that is easily walkable for residents. An elementary school is situated on the southern border and is also accessible on foot. There are, unfortunately, no commercial services nearby for residents to walk to.

The Yuma climate is one of the hottest, driest urban areas in the world and heat-related illnesses can be an issue for much of the year if people or pets are overexposed. Activity should be limited during the height of the day when temperatures soar. Dog walkers in Yuma are encouraged to walk their canine companions as early in the day as possible or later when the sun is setting and temperatures cool a bit. Winter temperatures are somewhat more moderate and pleasant for walking and warm outerwear is not required.

What is the terrain like in Sierra Sunset?

Sierra Sunset is a developed residential urban region on the outskirts of Yuma. There is aerated, irrigated cropland on the west side of the neighborhood and residents can enjoy the beautiful countryside right on their doorstep.

The terrain in Sierra Sunset is flat and there are no steep hills for pedestrians and their pups to worry about climbing up in hot weather. Residential properties vary with some having desert-friendly landscaping and others with more traditional lawns and trees. Large shade trees are uncommon in the area which is fairly open.

Streets are laid out in a traditional urban grid pattern with sidewalks along residential streets providing separate walkways for dog walkers. There is some undeveloped land in the community that provides communal open recreational space for locals to play with their pooches. The Central Stub Number Two Drain also runs north to south through the area, dividing the region into two halves. Natural trails along the waterway are accessible, if desired!

How many greenways are there in Sierra Sunset?

West Wetlands Park is located northeast of Sierra Sunset, a short drive away along the Colorado River. The park is full of walking trails to explore with your dog and take in this scenic park. West Wetlands Park has lots of open grassy areas with plenty of activities like flying kites, practicing yoga, and playing disc golf. Other activities like photography, geocaching, and painting as well as traditional sports are frequent occurrences.

Two playgrounds are available for children and the river provides fishing opportunities. Teach your pup to ride quietly in a canoe or kayak and you will have a whole new way to enjoy this greenway! The park has lots of special events like charity walks, music festivals, movies in the park,, and a Renaissance Faire.

There are two other smaller parks immediately south of West Wetlands Park. These include the Joe Henry Memorial Park and Latino Americano Park that also provide great green spaces to explore.
