Wag! Walkers know Koreatown

Koreatown is located in central Los Angeles, west of the downtown core. There are many historic art deco buildings in the area that were preserved by an influx of immigrants of Korean ethnicity, and many Korean shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and clubs, are located in this neighborhood that give the community it’s unique name. This neighborhood attracts tourists and Los Angeles residents, as well as Koreatown locals, to its famous restaurants. Koreatown has become a popular destination for foodies from near and far. Koreatown features plenty of multi-story and high-rise residences, which make it the most densely populated area in Los Angeles. There are plenty of services catering to these local residents including pet shops, groomers, and veterinarians in the community and adjacent areas that provide services to Koreatown pet owners and their canine companions. With so many interesting shops, cafes and restaurants throughout the area, locals and visitors alike enjoy access on foot.  If you are with your dog some eateries with patios may allow dogs on outdoor seating. The weather for strolling around Koreatown is usually sunny, with few rainy days in central Los Angeles. Weather can be extremely hot however, so be prepared to take shady rests and bring water if needed.

What is the terrain like in Koreatown?

Koreatown is generally flat, with an average elevation around 200 feet above sea level. This well developed neighborhood is the most densely populated in the Los Angeles area, and features plenty of high-rise and multi-story buildings, and both residential and commercial structures. There are lots of ethnic and non ethnic cafes, restaurants and nightclubs in the neighborhood and the area is busy around the clock with locals and visitors to the area. This means there is plenty of traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian. When walking through the area with your dog, stick to walkways, watch for traffic, and keep your dog leashed. Busy pedestrian ways can be intimidating to your dog if he is not used to the sights and sounds of vehicles on nearby streets and other people passing by. Acclimatize your dog to all the activity in this area and try to pick quieter times to walk at first if necessary. There are not a lot of natural areas in Koreatown, but several major roadways feature sidewalks lined with green spaces that allow for a more natural experience for pedestrians with pets and cool grass lining boulevards that are easier on overheated doggy feet!

How many greenways are there in Koreatown?

This well developed area does not have a lot of parks, however, many roadways in the area feature seperate green areas, between roadways and sidewalks, providing a greenway experience for pedestrians with pups, such as along Mariposa Avenue, Normandie Avenue and Harvard Boulevard. Considering the dense population and variety of businesses in this busy area, a lot of traditional landscaping and shade trees have been preserved, even in commercial areas, that provide shade to those on foot. There are a few nearby parks, including Seoul International Park, which features sports and recreation facilities for locals and has many activities, programs and events.  The small, but beautiful, Liberty Park has just been designated a preserve area and has trees, open lawn, and benches, with a walking path. This little park makes a great destination to enjoy with your four legged friend on a hot summer day, right in Koreatown. The nearby beaches and natural areas of Los Angeles can be accessed by vehicle to the west and north, for oceanside romps at Santa Monica Beach with your dog or natural hikes with sweeping vistas in the Santa Monica mountains.
