Wag! Walkers know Shadow Hills
Shadow Hills is a largely residential, semi-rural community located 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. This neighborhood is located in the San Fernando Valley on the edge of the Verdugo Mountains. It is mostly residential, but there are several equestrian-related businesses like stables, riding clubs, and sanctuaries in the area. Unfortunately, there is a lack of non-horse, pet-related businesses in the area such as the local groomer located on south side of the neighborhood. Your pup may appreciate a quick bath and trim in the summer when temperatures can climb a little.

Shadow Hills has a rather mild climate. Average temperatures usually stay in the mid-range and most of the rainfall happens in the winter seasons. Thankfully, most days will be perfect for a walk or hike without worrying about heat exhaustion or getting too cold. Just be sure to grab a sweater during the evenings, as it does get a little chilly.
What is the terrain like in Shadow Hills?
As Shadow Hills is on the edge of Verdugo Mountains, the neighborhood is mostly hilly with one side of the area on a rather steep incline. Definitely scope out your walking route first, or you may get a bit more exercise than you intended which can cause some wear on dogs that are not quite used to heavier exercise.

Additionally, the terrain is a good balance of artificial and natural. As mentioned, there are some building, homes, and businesses in the area but it is largely open and natural terrain. The residential areas of Shadow Hills are generally standalone, single-family homes and usually have large front and back yards with plenty of open, natural space to utilize.
The boundaries of Shadow Hills include Wentworth Street to the north, San Fernando Expressway to the east, Sunland Boulevard to the south, and Stonehurst Avenue and North Clybourn Avenue to the west.
How many greenways are there in Shadow Hills?
Because Shadow Hills is a more rural community, there are plenty of nearby options to enjoy more natural environments. Within Shadow Hills, you will find the Shadow Hills Hiking Trails which are perfect if you are looking for a short hike for you and your pup without having to go far outside of the neighborhood.

Nearby, you will find Stonehurst Recreation Center and its respective greenway. You can also find Hansen Dam Recreation Center and Sunland Recreation Center and the areas around them that are available for use. Unfortunately, none of these areas have dog-friendly areas, so your dog will need to remain leashed at all times. All of these are largely landscaped areas with no distinct walking trails, but you may be able to get a short game of fetch in here and there. Remember to be polite and courteous to other locals and pedestrians and you can enjoy your daily outing in the afternoon sun!
