Wag! Walkers know Sabre Springs
Pedestrian travel to this commercial area is impeded by the natural ravine with steep terrain that separates the homes in Sabre Springs from the commercial area along the Scripps Poway Parkway. Residents either need to use natural trails through the ravine which may not be accessible or skirt around the area using neighborhood streets which can be a 40-minute walk or more.
San Diego has warm, sunny weather for long walks with your canine companion or to enjoy an outdoor meal.
What is the terrain like in Sabre Springs?
Sabre Springs is bordered by interstate 15 on the west side, the Ted Williams Parkway on the north, the Penasquitos Creek on the south, and the Poway city limits, an irregular border, on the east side. There is a business park on the northwest side which is not a pedestrian-friendly area for dog walkers and their pets.
Development of the area began in 1985 and was completed by 2010. Homes are well maintained, single-family detached dwellings on well landscaped properties. Penasquitos Creek and the associated ravine runs along the south side, creating a large, natural area with steep, varied terrain in the community and the mountains extend into the neighborhoods north side.
The terrain in the region is hilly and, when walking with your dog, you will need to hike up some steep terrain. If you or your pup has mobility issues, this can be problematic. Sidewalks are prevalent in the neighborhood and provide separate pedestrian ways for people and pets.
How many greenways are there in Sabre Springs?
Sabre Springs is home to two neighborhood parks. The Sabre Springs Park is located on Saber Springs Parkway. This park has ball fields with a paved path around the outside which makes a great walking location for you and your pup. There are also playgrounds in this park. The park is located adjacent to the Van Dam Peak Savannah Trailhead which provides access to the natural mountain area to the north. If you and your dog are up for some rough natural terrain and elevation changes, this is an excellent greenway to explore.
The South Creek Park is situated on Wickerbay Cove near the local elementary school. This park has a playground and ball field, providing access to the Penasquitos Creek Trail. This trail is two miles long and connects to natural trails along the creek ravine.
A short eight-minute drive to the east is the Poway Dog Park. This 1.75-acre off-leash park has three enclosed sections for dogs of different sizes and ability levels.
