Wag! Walkers know Corona Heights
Corona Heights is just north of Market Street and is considered part of the Castro and Upper Market areas. It lies between Dolores Heights and Cole Valley with the Twin Peaks Reservoir lying south of it. Construction of this neighborhood began in 1890. Excavation on the hill made space for the Gary Brothers Quarry and Brick Factory. This quarry cut streets out of the rock surrounding it so that they could transport bricks from the area.
When the quarry closed, this became a natural location for a neighborhood to be built. Where the quarry used to be is the Corona Heights Park. This large open space offers panoramic views of the city. Construction of the quarry created a unique neighborhood and a gorgeous walk. The nearby Eureka Valley dog run is a perfect place for your dog to run off leash with their friends and Little Ark Dog Grooming is not far and can have your dog looking good.
What is the terrain like in Corona Heights?
The extremely mountainous terrain makes this a unique neighborhood to walk through with your dog. Gorgeous views are available from almost every block of the neighborhood. The elevation and lack of structures to break the wind means that breezes are very pleasant in Corona Heights, making it a cooler walk than much of San Francisco. The streets are narrow, so you will need to be careful of oncoming traffic.
You don't have far to go to find a place for your dog to run on a loose leash. The beautiful Corona Heights Park offers panoramic views of the city and gorgeous walks along natural dirt trails on both relatively level ground and over steep terrain. The many rock outcroppings combined with grassy areas and loose sand make for extremely varied terrain that will challenge your dog's body and mind and leave them happy and tired at the end of your walk.
How many greenways are there in Corona Heights?
Just a block over, Buena Vista Park has miles of beautiful trails through mature tree cover and heavy greenery. The more extensive shrubbery of this park keep it cooler and provide more shade on hot San Francisco days. That said, all of the greenery also blocks the views and the breeze. Together, these two parks provide an extensive and varied exploration opportunity for you and your dog. The dog run at Buena Vista is a wonderful shady place where your dog can run off-leash with their friends.
