Living here is not for the faint of heart as this main business district is full of life, noise, and people. Of course, making sure that you and your furry companion have everything you need is important too, and fortunately, those doggy essentials are only a few blocks outside the neighborhood. You won’t have to go far for Fluffy’s spa day as there are plenty of groomers in close proximity, but veterinarians are a bit of an excursion from the downtown area. Weather in San Francisco is very mild, but it can be a bit damp due to the rain and wind that coastal type areas are prone to.
What is the terrain like in Downtown?
The downtown area of San Francisco is one of the few areas that you will find that are actually mostly flat. You will find some hills, especially around the outer perimeter of the area. Many of these hills are very gentle which is ideal for those that are just starting out and are hoping to build some exercise into their dog walking routine. If Fluffy needs to lose a few of those extra pounds they have put on from eating all those treats, then these hills will be a perfect place to start.
If you are intent on getting a bit more exercise, head to the outskirts of downtown to the west or north where the elevations are a bit more challenging. Expect all artificial terrain made up of mostly concrete in this area. It is as urban as it gets and you will find yourself lucky to find a tree or two.
How many greenways are there in Downtown?
Surprisingly, there are more than a couple of greenways available in the downtown area and near it. To the east, you will find Sydney Walton Square which takes up an entire city block and has a nice patch of grass and some trees for you and your dog to enjoy. Close to the waterfront, you will find Maritime Plaza Park, Ferry Park, and Parrot Park all on one city block and one street over, there is the 5.3-acre Sue Bierman Park. What this adds up to is lots of greenway for your pup to enjoy.
Across the freeway and towards the water, you will find the San Francisco Trail which leads to more parks to the south. If you are looking for a place to rest on your walk, Transamerica Redwood Park sits in the center of the downtown neighborhood. Along the outskirts of this area, you will find even more parks that can make for a fun afternoon walk.
