Wag! Walkers know San Francisco State University
San Francisco State University is an urban, 142-acre campus located southwest of downtown San Francisco. The campus has beautiful, minimalist architecture, bright green lawns, numerous sculptures, and lots of wide, shaded sidewalks. Due to its low available residential space, the majority of the students live off campus. However, if you're walking mid-day in peak university hours, you can expect a lot of foot traffic around you. The campus is separated into quads and the southeast quad is perhaps the best for dog walking. This quadrant has the university's focal point of the area and stretches out in a large green space where multiple paths cross. The southeast quad is also where a majority of classroom buildings are, as opposed to sports fields and athletic practice areas. This ensures that you'll be able to actually walk around and not spend your time weaving between fields and buildings you might not have access to.
What is the terrain like in San Francisco State University?
SFSU is a really beautiful place to be when it comes to terrain. There is a wonderful balance of nature and architecture that complement each other really well. Any hills on this campus are low and gradual, providing nice rolling environments. In some spots, it's easy to forget you're at a University and not just in a wonderful park. There are redwoods and conifers, flowers, and grasses all built between street-sized sidewalks. There are even themed 'gardens' such as the succulent garden, the Coastal California Garden, and Memorial Grove. If you're trying to get out of the wilderness and into more of a metropolitan feel, the buildings along Font Blvd. next to the West Campus Green offer restaurants, cafes, and shops. Be sure to bring along doggie bags! In an area of such high foot traffic, you don't want to be the one to ruin someones walk to class or distrub the wonderful terrain.
How many greenways are there in San Francisco State University?
As mentioned before, the quad of campus is a really nice spot to walk around, explore the building, enjoy nature, and let your dog do the same. The campus is pretty locked in by built-up commercial and residential areas on all sides except one. If you want to get away from SFSU and do some exploring, on the other side of Lake Merced Blvd. is an area called Lakeshore. There's a golf course and, of course, the lake, but this entire area encompasses what's known as Lake Merced Park. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, and abundant wildlife. Exploring this area is only recommended if you have a healthy dog with you and lots of time on your hands for the walk, as it's not on campus and encompasses over 600 acres to play around in. However, if you bring waters and a snack, this could prove to be a tranquil way to spend your day.
