Wag! Walkers know Twin Peaks West
A long history follows the Twin Peaks West area of San Francisco. Originally a ranch, it was sold to a number of the mayors of San Francisco and eventually became home to a streetcar tunnel into the city which is still in service now as part of the subway system. Near its center is Mt. Davidson, the tallest of the San Francisco Peaks. As a mainly residential area, most of the amenities such as food and drink can be found on the outer edges or just outside of the neighborhood. Puppy daycares, pet stores, grooming shops, and veterinarians all exist around the borders of this neighborhood as well.
San Francisco weather is mild with an average temperature of 57 degrees and no extremes year-round. The only thing that might keep you at home on certain days is rain and wind, but with nearly 300 dry days a year, even that should not be an issue.
What is the terrain like in Twin Peaks West?
There is no getting around it, this area of San Francisco has an abundance of hills. Close to the twin peaks and with Mt. Davidson at its center, you will be hard-pressed to find any flat ground in this neighborhood. These are the tallest peaks in San Francisco, so hiking enthusiasts will love this area as will serious athletic dogs and their owners. Balboa Terrace, a sub-neighborhood to the west, is perhaps the flattest piece of ground so if you have an elderly dog, this might be the best place to start out.
Concrete sidewalks will be your primary surface for walking, although this area has more green than most neighborhoods in San Francisco. Even so, if you want to find some grass for your four-legged companion, you will be better off seeking out a park or trail in the neighborhood or surrounding areas. Fortunately, there are plenty of options to choose from.
How many greenways are there in Twin Peaks West?
Most San Francisco neighborhoods are old and have left little in the way of greenery along the streets. In Twin Peaks West, you are very fortunate to have the recreational area surrounding Mt. Davidson with plenty of trails and trees. Multiple trails open up in different areas of the neighborhood and there is a park entrance at the south end of the hill. Not all of the trails are difficult, so even beginning walkers can enjoy this wonderful resource.
Hawk Hill Park and Golden Gate Heights Park provide a resource for walkers in the north end of Twin Peaks West. Golden Gate is built on sand dunes and offers some trails as well while Hawk Hill offers breathtaking views and plenty of places to walk.
Finally, Glen Canyon Park is on the eastern perimeter of the neighborhood and offers deep canyon trails. It's a great place to just get away and enjoy a bit of nature!
