Wag! Walkers know Manor Park

Northwest Washington, D.C. is home to Manor Park, a residential neighborhood with schools, churches, and some local businesses. Restaurants and shops are located in a small pocket on the north side of Manor Park and along busy thoroughfares near the borders of the district.

Dog owners and their furry friends can enjoy walking the community most of the year as long as they are prepared for various weather conditions and temperatures, and avoid occasional storms. Winters boast sub-freezing temperatures and some snow, so warm coats and footwear are a must for you and your pup to stay comfortable on walks. Summers are humid and you will need to ensure you and your pup stay hydrated and do not overexert yourself on long treks. Severe thunderstorms occur in spring and summer and should be avoided while occasional fall and winter storms can also generate hazardous conditions that may require you to plan activities inside.

What is the terrain like in Manor Park?

Manor Park is bordered by the Takoma neighborhood at the north tip, train tracks along the east border, 4th Street on the west, and Missouri Avenue on the south. Manor Park is a developed urban residential area with some commercial activity in various locals. The train tracks on the east side should only be crossed at designated pedestrian crossings.

The neighborhood is mostly made up of row houses with some duplexes and single-family detached dwellings on well landscaped and maintained properties. Many homes have sizable backyards. Parks and school grounds with sports fields are located in the neighborhood and provide open green spaces.

The neighborhood is hilly although inclines are not steep and walking up hills is not usually considered too difficult. There are separate pedestrian ways along residential roads, so you and your pup don't have to share the road with vehicles. Grassy berms provide soft, cool footing along pedestrian ways.

How many greenways are there in Manor Park?

Fort Slocum Park is situated on the south side of Manor Park and is easily accessible on foot for residents and their canine companions to walk to. This small, pretty park has a historical marker indicative of its civil war history. The park has wooded areas and open grassy lawns that are perfect for picnics. Walking paths in the greenway are a great place to take a stroll with your pooch.

Just a few blocks to the south, the large Fort Totten Park is situated at the site of a former civil war installation and has a memorial. This park has a large wooded area and some open lawns with a hard surfaced hiking path. Watch out for other trail users such as joggers and cyclists. Your dog should remain leashed in this park and you should bring supplies to clean up after them to be respectful to other park and trail users.
