Washington, D.C. weather presents a variety of conditions and temperatures for pedestrians to contend with in the Marshall Heights neighborhood. People who walk their pets regularly should expect cold and sometimes snowy winters with warm outerwear. Severe blizzards are not common, but when they do occur, you should find ways to exercise your pup inside and wait for weather conditions to improve before venturing out. Summers are humid, so vary the time of day during which you take your dog out to find cooler periods and drink lots of water to avoid the heat.
Marshall Heights is bordered by East Capitol Street on the north side, Central Avenue on its northeast, Southern Avenue and the Maryland border on the southeast, and Benning Road on the west side. There is a variety of housing in the area with some public housing complexes, low rise apartments, duplexes, multi-family units, and single detached residences. There are also quite a few empty, undeveloped lots in the region. Properties are landscaped and there are trees and lawns on private and public properties.
Most streets have separate sidewalks and grass berms, so you and your pup won't have to share the road with local traffic. Marshall Heights has some level areas and some hills with gentle inclines that are not usually very steep or difficult to climb when walking with your pooch in the district. There are no large natural areas in the community, but several sports and recreation grounds provide green spaces to visit.
The Fletcher-Johnson Recreation center is located on the west side of Marshall Heights. This greenway is situated on a large hill which features beautifully maintained grassy areas and large trees. This property is a great place to take your dog for a walk with views and varying terrain. Recreation facilities in the park include sports fields and basketball courts.
The Benning Park Community Center and grounds are situated on the east side and boast a playground, pool, splash park, basketball courts, and multi-use sports fields that are circled by a paved walking path where you can stroll with your dog. Keep your pup leashed and be prepared to clean up after them to maintain the park for other users.
Centrally located in Marshall Heights is the Harris Recreation Center which has a large open sports field next to an elementary school. When not in use by the school or local sports team, this makes a convenient spot for a run with your pooch.
