Wag! Walkers know Michigan Park

Washington, D.C. is the capitol of the United States of America, but, as a city, it has so much more to offer beyond housing the three branches of government. There is always something happening in D.C., whether it's the latest political protest, the grand opening of a new museum, monument, or memorial, or a popular festival, like the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle, or the DC Jazz Festival. Washington, D.C. is also known for its distinct neighborhoods.

One of these neighborhoods, Michigan Park, is located in northeast D.C. Michigan Park has a good blend of residential and commercial areas. Residentially, this neighborhood is composed of standalone, single-family homes and, in the northern part of the community, duplexes or townhomes. Commercially, the largest property in Michigan Park is Providence Hospital which is located centrally in the neighborhood. Residents also have access to a few churches, an elementary school, several banks, and a few small restaurants.

What is the terrain like in Michigan Park?

Michigan Park is a rather hilly neighborhood, but, generally speaking, you'll experience a steady decrease in elevation as you move south in the neighborhood, particularly along South Dakota Avenue. However, with a bit of research, you should be able to find some walking routes that are less strenuous than others.

Additionally, Michigan Park has plenty of well-maintained sidewalks, particularly through the residential areas of the neighborhood. Many of these sidewalks also have large trees lining them which will provide some much needed shade during those sunny, humid summer months.

The boundaries of Michigan Park include Gallatin Street to the north, South Dakota Avenue to the east, Taylor Street to the south, and John McCormack Drive and a Metro line to the west. Providence Hospital is located at the intersection of 12th Street and Varnum Street, and that area may have a higher volume of traffic than the rest of the neighborhood.

How many greenways are there in Michigan Park?

Unfortunately, there is only one public greenway located in Michigan Park. The St. Vincent De Paul Statue and its respective greenway is located immediately outside of the St. Joseph's Seminary. While it may be a good place for you and your pup to briefly walk through, it is not a great place to stop, rest, or for your pup to take a quick pit stop.

Other greenways that can been seen on maps of this neighborhood are actually playgrounds and sports facilities for the local schools. However, nearby greenways not located within Michigan Park include Fort Circle Park, Fort Totten Park, Riggs Road Playground, Fort Slocum Park, Neighborhood Park, Barnum Hill Park, Avondale Neighborhood Park, and Michigan Park Hills Park.

While there are no dog parks located in Michigan Park, you have plenty of nearby options to explore. The nearest dog parks include Upshur Dog Park to the west, Heurich Dog Park to the northeast, and Landon Dog Park to the south.
