One of the most useful commands you can teach your fur-baby is to heel without a leash. If your dog is a bit of an escape artist, teaching them to heel without any restraint will come in handy for their safety and your sanity. Fill up your treat bag and put your dog on a leash. Show your hound a Scooby snack, and when they come to your side and stay there, give them the treat. Once they start to walk off, offer up another, and slowly increase the amount of time between treats. Add the command “heel”, and once your pup has got the hang of it, try the same method in your yard without a leash.
Like many doggos, your canine might try to eat out of the trash every once in a while. This is dangerous behavior; however, you can train your pup to stop eating trash within a couple of weeks. Try and put your garbage where your dog can't reach it, and if they try their luck anyway, put yourself between them and the trash. Stay firm and consistent, and reward your woofer if they manage to resist their temptations.
If you've just got off a long day at work, chances are you're going to want to relax right away. But what if you forgot to close the front door? Well, you teach your pup to do it for you! Training your pooch to close a door can take up around two months, but it's a neat trick to teach your mutt. You can use a post-it note to get your pup to close a door. Put the post-it note in front of your dog, and anytime they try to touch or sniff the note, praise and reward them. Repeat this, and then attach the post-it note to a door. Find a command that works for your pup, and later, try it out on different doors until they get the hang of it.
The city of Maywood is an awesome place for pet parents, with a ton of beautiful dog parks near the city. The Maywood area boasts a bunch of dog trainers who are itching to teach your canine companion. Just make sure you don't jump the gun and book a trainer without reading the T&Cs first.
Many dog trainers across Los Angeles require dogs to have up-to-date vaccinations before attending any sessions. You'll want to give your trainer plenty of notice when booking, as most puppy training classes in LA are booked solid for several weeks.
Group puppy training and obedience classes are popular in and around Maywood, as they provide an opportunity for you and your doggo to socialize. Group dog training typically runs from 4 to 8 weeks. These courses can cost anywhere from $120 to $250 depending on the duration.
Alternatively, you might find Fido is better suited to private sessions. While your pup will probably pick up new skills quickly at one-on-one meetings, they're much more costly, and you'll find yourself paying between $70 and $250 for a single class.
Trying to find the best mentor for your mutt can be challenging, with dozens of dog trainers quoting a wide range of prices for teaching your pup different skills and commands. Maywood dog trainers on the Wag! platform charge $60 per hour on average. No need to commit to a course or join a waiting list. You can even talk to your chosen coach beforehand to see what they offer and whether it suits your woofer's needs. Our booking process is transparent from start to finish. Pet parents receive an estimate during booking, with a finalized price once they've chosen a trainer.
Maywood is pretty small, so you won't find any dog parks right in the city. Venture to nearby cities like Downey and Culver City to find some off-leash dog parks suitable for your four-legged friend. You should always check out the park's rules and regulations before heading on your adventure, as some dog parks have pretty strict rules on microchipping and vaccinations you'll need to follow.
The Boneyard Off-Leash Dog Park in Culver City contains a one-acre dog run split into separate sections so large and small dogs can play separately. You'll find plenty of water fountains and shade at this park, so your dog can stay cool in the scorching heat. This park is also open until 10 PM, which is perfect for pet parents who work late into the evening.
If you'd prefer to stay as close to home as possible, visit the Rio San Gabriel Dog Park in Downey. This park features a 200-foot square dog run where Sparky can blow off some steam. As the off-leash area is fairly small, you might want to walk your pooch down some of the nearby trails before letting them off-leash.
You'll be happy to hear that dog trainers on the Wag! platform boast an array of qualifications and skills that'll help your mutt flourish. Each dog trainer has a star rating, so you'll quickly be able to tell who the best mentors are in Maywood.
If your fur-baby is a rare breed, don't fret, as Maywood dog trainers with Wag! have experience working with lots of different doggos. Chihuahuas are one of the most popular breeds in Maywood, and these adorable miniature pooches make great family pets as they're incredibly loyal. Chihuahuas can also be reasonably headstrong, so you'll want to engage in some training and activities to make sure they know their place in the pecking order.
Chihuahuas, like all dogs, require a bit of training to make sure they're a model canine companion. Find the perfect dog trainer on the Wag! app today to get your woofer's tail wagging.
