Wag! Walkers know Ortona Park
Ortona Park is a large residential community located on the peninsula spanning from the beach on the eastern side to the Halifax River on the western side. Most of the homes here are single-family houses in a suburban setting.
There is plenty of shopping in the area including a Publix grocery store and a Marshall's. Within a short driving distance, you have access to a range of outstanding restaurants. You are also close to the heart of the beachside clubbing scene, perfect for those who like to dance the night away. Seabreeze High School is also right next door and there is a tiny park over by the beach.
If you enjoy the hot weather, sand, and surf, then you will love summer days here in the 90s. Even the winters here are wonderful. You can count on some rain and temperatures in the upper 40s and 50s, but rarely, if ever, any snow.
What is the terrain like in Ortona Park?
Ortona Park is your very typical suburban community of single-family homes laid out in a simple block grid pattern. Most of the streets here have sidewalks for you and your dog to use when you go walking. While most of them are in good repair, don't be surprised at how many look like they have a coating of rust. This is thanks to the number of homes with sprinkler systems that use a well or are fed by the many water-to-air air conditioning systems in use here. Due to the shallow water table, there is a lot of iron in the water. The good news is that the stains won't hurt anything, they may just look odd.
The flat ground here can make things a bit dull as far as going for walks, but you can always use the beach to take your dog for long healthy walks on any day of the week.
How many greenways are there in Ortona Park?
If the beach is not enough of a green space for you, it's only a short cruise up N Beach Street to Tomoka State Park and Bulow Creek State Park. Tomoka State Park covers 2,000 acres at the headwaters of the Tomoka River. It is home to Nocoroco, a 1,500-year-old Timucuan Indian village. The park has a couple of walking trails and over 160 species of birds who call the area home.
Just past Tomoka State Park is Bulow State Park covering 5,600 acres of which some 1,500 are submerged. Bulow is home to one of the largest remaining areas of Southern Live Oak Forest to be found along the east coast of Florida. There are several trails for you and your dog to explore and a shady picnic area on the lawn from which you can see the 400-year-old Fairchild Oak. Both are great places to take your family out for a day in the sunshine!
