Wag! Walkers know Ortona South
Ortona South is a community on the peninsula that runs east-west between the beach on the east side and the Halifax River on the west side. The homes here are modest single-family residences with the exception of the Budget Inn Express Beachside.
Living here puts you close to the action, but far enough away to be able to enjoy some peace and quiet. A1A, the road running along the beach, is home to an amazing array of restaurants serving everything from burgers and fries to some of the finest seafood you are likely to find anywhere. The Boardwalk is home to the hottest nightclubs in town serving up a blend of live and mixed music. Many of the clubs here have outside decks that lead right out onto the beach.
Summers here are the perfect time to spend the 90-degree days on the beaches and the warm evenings dancing the night away to your favorite type of music.
What is the terrain like in Ortona South?
Living here puts you right across the street from some of the best walking terrain in town on the World's Most Famous Beach.
On your way out on your walks, you can stick to the soft sand. It will give your legs an incredible workout! Soft dry sand tends to suck at your feet and your dog's paws every time you take a step. The extra effort needed to take those steps will work your leg muscles better than virtually any other type of walking.
Just when you think you can't go any further, it's time to turn around and use the hard-packed wet sand to walk back. Don't forget to take off your shoes and socks if you can and join your pup romping around in the refreshing surf! It will help cool down your feet and your leg muscles while you slowly wander home to take a well-earned rest.
How many greenways are there in Ortona South?
Beyond the fact that you live right next to the beach which is a virtually endless green space, you and your pup still need more room to walk around in.
The nearest green space is just a few miles to the north on Beach Street back over on the other side of Ormond Beach. The Tomoka State Park covers approximately 2,000 acres at the headwaters of the Tomoka River. There are walking trails running through the park, some of the last hardwood hammocks to be found in this area to walk through, and Nocoroco. This is a 1,500-year-old Timucuan Indian village inhabited by some of the first Native Americans to live in the area.
Over 160 different species of birds make their home here, including bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and the Bachman's Sparrow. You never know what you might see while you are walking along, including black bears, whitetail deer, and more!
