Wag! Walkers know River Dunes
Living in River Dunes puts you on the east bank of the Halifax River and only a couple of blocks from the beach. The homes here are large, single-family homes with plenty of grass. But if you are looking for a place to eat, travel over to A1A and head north where several of the top restaurants have made their home. Alongside these eateries, you will also find a few nightclubs.
But if you are looking for dog parks where you can let Fido run around off-leash, you'll need to go back over to the mainland. Of course, you do have the beach to play and walk on at your disposal. The two of you can use the waterfront for your walks practically every day of the year with summer temperatures in the 90s and winters in the 50s. The only thing that might affect your ability to go for walks is the occasional rainy day.
What is the terrain like in River Dunes?
The terrain here isn't much to talk about beyond the fact that it is very flat and suburban. How do you use terrain like this to help your pup get the exercise they need? Luckily, the area has numerous residential blocks with sidewalks to use for your daily strolls. By choosing different blocks to walk around each day and changing the number of blocks in each walk, you can vary them just enough to keep them interesting.
The other alternative is to make good use of the beach. Here, you can use the soft sand that is hard to walk in to build muscles and improve stamina. Be sure you plan to walk only as far as you can walk back! On the way back, you can use the wet sand by the water's edge. It's easier on the feet, giving you a chance to walk in the surf and have a little fun.
How many greenways are there in River Dunes?
Obviously, the beach is the closest open space, but if you are looking for trees, you won't find any on the sand. The nearest place with plenty of room is Bulow Creek State Park, covering almost 6,000 acres just a short drive north on Beach Street over on the mainland side. The park sits on the former site of the Bulow Plantation. The buildings were burned down during the Second Seminole War in 1836, however, there are several nature trails for you and your pooch to take hikes along in the shade while you look for the native wildlife.
Consider packing a picnic and taking the time to sit in the shade near the Fairchild Oak, one of the oldest known living examples of Live Oak in the south. The tree is thought to be approximately 400 years old! Bring the whole family and don't forget the mosquito repellent!
