The Media and Entertainment District, also known as the Omni, is an up-and-coming urban neighborhood in an urban setting with numerous high-rise apartment buildings mixed in with smaller historic buildings. Along with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the district is home to the oldest cemetery in Miami and several of the oldest synagogues and churches in the city. From fabulous restaurants to exceptional nightclubs and stylish apartments, you can find it all right here. More importantly, there are pet supply stores and dog-friendly parks right in the neighborhood.
The climate here is marvelous. Winters are mild and rainy with temperatures hovering in the 60s and 70s. Summers are even better with temperatures in the 80s and 90s along with the occasional thunderstorm. Just make sure you have an umbrella handy when you and Spot go out for your daily walks in case you miss the signs of rain.
The terrain here is a mix of paved city-like area and open spaces such as parks and empty lots. The one thing you won't find here is much in the way of changes in elevation. The area is pretty flat and has little challenge to offer. The only choice if you live in one of the downtown apartment buildings is to change the blocks you walk around or the direction in which you walk.
Keep in mind that walking on nothing but pavement can be hard on Spot's paws, so be sure to give them time to toughen up before you get carried away with how far you walk. During the summer months, keep your walks to the early morning hours. The pavement has a tendency to heat up when the temperatures rise which can cause some discomfort and pain to sensitive puppy paws. Be aware of this during your daily excursions.
While you could think of the numerous vacant lots as green spaces, most of them are fenced off to keep you and everyone else out. Fortunately, there are two large parks within the community to enjoy. The first is Biscayne Park on NE 19th St. The park is not much more than a vast field of grass that is used for a variety of sports. It sits next to the City of Miami Cemetery and is a great place to go with your pup to spend some time romping around.
The other park sits on the water. Margaret
Pace Park offers a walking trail running around the entire park, plenty of
grass to walk around on, and a fenced-in dog park split in the
middle for large and small dogs for safety's sake. You can let your pooch run around
and play with the other dogs while you relax in the shade with an ice-cold
sweet tea.
