Top dog walkers in San Marco Island
Wag! Walkers know San Marco Island
San Marco Island is one of the man-made islands forming the Venetian Islands. It is home to many of the rich and famous who value this island for its privacy and central location to both mainland and oceanside Miami. All of the homes here offer plenty of square footage and most are on the water with a few in the center of the island.
As you might expect from a small island such as this, if you want anything from pet supply stores and dog-friendly parks to places to eat or dance the night away, you won't find them on the island. Instead, you will have to take the Venetian Causeway over to one side of the city of the other. The weather here, however, is spectacular with mild winters and warm summers that are perfect for taking your dog for a walk in almost every day of the year.
What is the terrain like in San Marco Island?
Being a man-made island, the ground here is flat and in short supply. Many who live on these islands bike, jog, and walk their dogs on the causeway. The distances between each island are short, making it popular to 'island jump' from one to the next as part of a daily exercise routine.
For example, you could start out with walks between Biscayne Island on the Miami side and walk to San Marco or, in this case, from San Marco to Biscayne and back until you are ready for a long walk. Then you can try going from San Marco to San Marino on the Miami Beach side and back. As you and your pup build up your stamina, you can add in Di Lido, Rivo Alto, and finally, Belle Island all the way to the east. Not only will you get plenty of great exercise, but you will also get to enjoy the many boats traveling through the waterway.
How many greenways are there in San Marco Island?
When you are on a man-made island out in the middle of Biscayne Bay, you probably shouldn't anticipate finding much in the way of empty green space. If you live on San Marco, the last thing you are going to find is any green space that isn't someone's backyard. The nearest of these is on Belle Isle and offers a large area of grass and trails to walk on. You could walk over the causeway to the island, take a lap or two around the park, and then let your pooch spend a little time playing in the grass.
A much better choice would be to cruise over to Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, named in memory of the late Bee Gees brother. This is a great place to sit back and watch the sunset or hike around the trails and play on the grass. There is also a playground for the munchkins to keep them busy while you relax.
