Wag! Walkers know Faulkner
Faulkner is a residential street running north-south between
Canal Street and Turnbull Bay Road. Living on this road puts you one block from the
Indian River North to the east and A1A to the west. Most of the homes here are
large, single-family units with big yards and plenty of shade trees for you and
your dog to enjoy while you are out on your walks together.
Depending on where you live on Faulkner, there are several chain
restaurants within walking distance. On the other side of the bridge, you will
find a great selection of restaurants, taverns, and pubs for you to choose from. All of this is only a short drive over the bridge.
There
are parks nearby for you and your dog to go hiking and canoeing in and, of course, there is the beach where early morning
walks with your pup are a very popular
activity.
What is the terrain like in Faulkner?
While you might be close to A1A, life along Faulkner is quite
peaceful by comparison. You can still hear the traffic noise but, for the most part, you are shielded from the noise by at least
two more blocks of homes. Providing you stick to
going for walks along your road or the surrounding blocks, you won’t find
traffic to be heavy, except during rush
hours. Plus, one block to the east, you have the river walkway, a wide strip of
grass you and your dog can use to walk from 6th Street all the way north to Riverside
Park.
You may encounter few neighbors out walking their dogs, but pedestrian traffic is minimal except for school pick up and
drop off times. One cool thing about taking your dog for walks around the neighborhood is that the streets are heavily lined with shade trees which will
help keep the scorching Florida sun off your head and shoulders.
How many greenways are there in Faulkner?
Along Faulkner Road, you won't find much in the way of usable
green space. But along the Indian River,
there is the pathway leading up to Riverside Park where you and your dog can
log several miles of walks each week. You may encounter a few others out walking
their dogs, but it can be a great way to make
new friends who share the same interests.
On the other side of the river is the Doris Leeper Spruce
Creek Preserve. The preserve covers more than 1,600 acres of forest, scrub, and
swamp. You and your dog can hike over three miles of trails taking you throughout
the preserve and to an observation tower that overlooks the swamps and go all the way to Rose Bay. The trails are very popular
with nature hikers and dog walkers with so much beautiful scenery to walk through
and plenty of shade on a nice, hot summer
day.
