Wag! Walkers know Halifax Shores
As the name suggests, the neighborhood of Halifax Shores sits on the east bank of Halifax River and is a five-minute walk from the Atlantic coast. The homes here are all larger single-family homes set back half a block from South Peninsular Drive, which can be a busy road. Most of the homes sit on saltwater canals that provide direct access to the riverfront.
Living here not only puts you close to the beach, but also several cafes and taverns. You are also very close to Dunlawton Avenue. To the east, this road ends on the coast where you and your pup can go for long walks together.
Along this road, there is a selection of big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Publix, and the ever-present Walmart Supercenter. There are several strip malls and shopping centers where you can find places to get your nails done, your dog groomed, and places to buy dog food, treats, toys, and everything else you need.
What is the terrain like in Halifax Shores?
Being set back off of South Peninsular Drive, luckily, helps keep the community of Halifax Shores mostly quiet. Like most residential areas, you should expect a little traffic during the morning and evening rush hours. Beyond these hours and during the school year when the school buses are running, you aren't likely to see much in the way of traffic that will interfere with your walks together.
The lack of traffic is a good thing as there aren't any sidewalks for you and your pooch to walk on. Unfortunately, this means that both of you will be walking on the streets. Even with little to no traffic, you should still keep a close eye out for passing vehicles.
Another thing you will have to deal with is kids of all ages playing in their yards and the streets. Keeping your dog on a short leash will help keep everyone safe.
How many greenways are there in Halifax Shores?
The nearest green space has to be the miles of beach running up and down the shores of the Atlantic coast. You can walk to the beach from your home in less than ten minutes or drive your car out on the dunes and park. Once there, you and your pup have a choice between the soft, dry sand that makes you struggle for every step and the firm, wet sand at the edge of the surf. This sand is much easier for both of you to walk on. Keep in mind that no matter how far you go, you'll still have to walk back!
Beyond the beach, if you feel like hopping in the car, there are a couple of small community parks to the north with room for the two of you to run around. If you don't mind a fifteen-minute drive over the bridge and down Spruce Creek Road, there is the Seemore Memorial Dog Park, the only off-leash dog park in town.
