This community is a historic neighborhood with beautiful older homes that are well maintained on generously sized properties. Commercial thoroughfares run along the west and east sides of the neighborhood and these main roads have heavier traffic. Luckily, the residential roads are quiet, peaceful, and have sidewalks for pets and people to stroll on. The terrain is relatively flat with only very slight inclines that are not difficult to navigate, so people and pets of all abilities should be fine walking through this area.

Greenways and trails abound in the Atkins Park region. There is a small but pretty park located right in the neighborhood on the west side. The North Highlands Park is only .41 acres but has a paved pedestrian path, trees, and open spaces where you can stroll in the shade with your pup.
A short distance to the west, residents and their pooches can access the Eastside Beltline Trail which is a 3-mile long greenway and pedestrian trail. Across the freeway, there are some large parks and greenways with miles of trails to explore. Springdale Park is located southeast and connects to Virgilee and Brightwood Parks, providing hundreds of acres of uninterrupted greenway. A long multi-use trail connects them and is a great place to take your dog for a long leisurely walk.
Farther to the south, Freedom Park is home to the Freedom Park Trail. This amazing trail extends for 19 miles and will take dog walkers west to the Freedom Parkway Dog Park.
