Wag! Walkers know Mozley Park
Atlanta weather is amenable, although winters are cool and rainy. A warm, waterproof jacket will keep you and your pup warm when walking the Mozley Park area during the winter months. Your pup may even appreciate a warm coat if your dog objects to wet fur! Spring and fall have temperate walking weather with some rain, but overall, are comfortable for walking with mostly warm sunny days. Summers, however, can be very hot and humid for dog walkers and their pets. You may need to get up early or make time in the evening to walk your dog when the temperatures are cooler.
What is the terrain like in Mozley Park?
The neighborhood is a long-established community that follows a gridiron pattern and was developed in the 1920s. Train tracks run adjacent to the Mozley Park greenway and park users should keep an eye on children and pets in the area.
The terrain in Mozley Park is hilly, although inclines are not particularly steep. If climbing hills is strenuous for you and your pet or the weather is particularly hot and humid, you may want to avoid hills on walks, if possible. There is a large cemetery on the west side of the community and Proctor Creek runs through the east side.
Homes in the area reflect Folk Victorian and Craftsman Bungalow architectural styles and are built relatively close together on small lots which would account for the higher than average population density. Private properties are well landscaped with large trees and attractive gardens and lawns.
How many greenways are there in Mozley Park?
Mozley Park contains a park of the same name on the northwest corner. The park has a recreation center, swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and sports fields. The central parts of the park are open with treed areas around the perimeter, providing shade. There is access to the Lionel Hampton Trail which travels through the park and extends into the neighborhood. This 1.2-mile asphalt-surfaced trail is open to bikers, inline skaters, hikers, and dogs on a leash. This trail runs through forested areas and connects to the Southwest Connector Trail which is part of the Atlanta Beltline.
The Westside Trail can be accessed on the east side of the community. This 3-mile long trail is a 14 foot wide, hard surfaced, hike and bike trail that runs through natural areas and communities. There are 16 access points to the trail, 14 of which are ADA accessible.
