Wag! Walkers know South Hill
South Hill is a neighborhood on the southern side of Bloomington, Illinois. The community is mostly residential with lots of tightly packed homes of varying sizes and architectural styles. It is within close proximity to downtown Bloomington and the Miller Park Zoo is one of the most popular attractions within its borders. The boundaries of the neighborhood consist of Main Street and Morris Avenue to the east and west and MacArthur Avenue and 6 Points Road to the north and south.
Bloomington is located near central Illinois but it is still on the northern side of the general American Midwest region, so it experiences mild summers and cold winters. In the winter time, average lows in Bloomington can be in the low 20s and high teens and the summers only have average highs in the mid-80s. If you walk your dog on a particularly cold day, make sure to keep both of you warm.
What is the terrain like in South Hill?
Many areas in the Midwest are known for being flat and much of the Bloomington region in Illinois reflects this. However, South Hill has more variable terrain than most of the city. Roads like South Low Street, which is a long thoroughfare that cuts through the center of the neighborhood, follow a gradual incline that goes up from south to north. There are several other sections on the outer edges of the neighborhood as well that have small hills and inclines.
There will not be heavy foot or street traffic within the residential parts of the neighborhood, but there are a few big thoroughfares that run in and around South Hill that are home to schools, churches, and small businesses. On roads like S. Center Street or Main Street, there will often be lots of cars on the road, so it may be easier to walk in the quieter sections of the neighborhood.
How many greenways are there in South Hill?
South Hill is home to several varieties of parks and greenways, many of which are within or immediately outside of its borders. Some of these options might not make for the best locations to walk a dog such as the multiple graveyards in the area or the Miller Park Zoo. However, Forrest Park, Highland Park Golf Course, and R. T. Dunn Fields all make for great areas to bring your dog.
Forrest Park is located in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood and it has a disc golf course as well as a large amount of open green space for walking. Highland Park Golf Course is exactly as the name suggests, a golf course, but it also has trails that wind around it for walking. R. T. Dunn Fields is a 5-acre sports complex with several open fields and athletic facilities which may have its own laws regarding dogs, so do be aware of them.
