Wag! Walkers know Avalon Park
Avalon Park is on the south side of Chicago, not far from the coast of Lake Michigan. This area was developed by Jonathan Pierce in the 1880s and the park carried his name until the Avalon Park Community Church led an effort to change the name in the early 1900s.
Avalon Park was settled initially by Irish and German workers who were employed with the local railroads. This area was often flooded so early settlers built their home on stilts until a sewer system was created in the early 1900s.
This residential neighborhood has a large regional park with the same name as the neighborhood. Several small restaurants and businesses are centered around South Stony Island Avenue. Hyde Park Animal Hospital is not too far to the north, so you have a convenient place to bring your dog for vaccines or in case of illness. Right in the center of town, the Pet Salon can have your dog looking great.
What is the terrain like in Avalon Park?
Avalon Park is a flat, primarily residential neighborhood with attractive homes and pleasant streets that are organized into long, straight blocks. Homes tend to be small and closely spaced, but their little front lawns are generally unfenced and there is a wide divider between sidewalk and road in most places so you will feel comfortable walking your dog on a relatively loose leash throughout most of the neighborhood.
Attractive landscaping paired with mature tree cover make this a lovely neighborhood to walk or bike with your dog. For a little diversity in your walk, you can go to Avalon Park and enjoy walking along the tree-lined paths around the ball fields.
For more interesting exploration, the coast is not far away. Miles of lovely grassy areas and a beautiful sandy beach will give your dog lots of diversity in terrain, as well as provide safe and enjoyable exposure to the water and the beach.
How many greenways are there in Avalon Park?
Avalon Park has an unusually large regional park of the same name. This park is large enough for you to enjoy a long stroll with your dog on a loose leash or enjoy biking at his side. For a more extensive green area to explore with your dog, head towards the coast and the cluster of parks and lovely beaches that you can find here.
Rainbow Beach Park provides a wide sandy beach that your dog will love, as well as miles of trail through grass and forest so you and your dog can lose yourself in natural settings. The natural area extends for many miles down the coast, providing forested walking trails along the water all the way to Street Workers Park.
If you are still enjoying your exploration, Calumet Park and Beach are south as well. You will just need to cut in on S. Harbor Ave. to cross the canal on S. Ewing Ave. bridge.
