This established neighborhood is flat and streets follow a traditional urban grid pattern. Roads have sidewalks and most have grassy verges with more large trees, providing soft footing for puppy pedestrians in the area. Many apartment properties have courtyards, pedestrian pathways, green spaces, and more trees, providing a park-like setting for residents that is easy to navigate and enjoy. Lincoln Avenue runs through the east side and this major roadway is lined with commercial businesses, activity, and increased traffic flow.
The oblong-shaped Legion Park lies on the west end of Budlong Woods and has a channel running through it. Legion Park is a 50-acre park with athletic fields, courts, four playgrounds, ornamental gardens, and a roller hockey area. This beautiful park has plenty of biking, walking, and jogging trails for area residents and their dogs to enjoy with open green areas. The north shore channel trail extends from Legion Park through this natural area and there are many more interwoven and winding trails in this park.
Most importantly for Budlong Woods' canine residents, there is a 10-acre dog-friendly area just southeast of the River Park fieldhouse. This area allows off-leash pets and provides a doggie drinking fountain. The refreshment is appreciated on hot, humid summer days. Dogs enjoying this area should have good off-leash recall and social skills if they are going to be playing off-leash as the area is not fenced.
