Burnside is located on the south side of Chicago and is the smallest of the 77 official Chicago Community Areas. This neighborhood has a combination of commercial, residential, and industrial activity. Industrial regions tend to be associated with the nearby train tracks and are not pedestrian friendly locations, however, residential neighborhoods are walkable and some businesses and services on main roads such as 93rd Street in the south, and 87th Street in the north part of the community can be reached by pedestrians accompanied by their pooches.

Weather in this Chicago neighborhood varies with the seasons. Summers tend to be hot, sunny, and quite humid. Pack water and plan shady breaks on long excursions during sweltering summer days. Winter temperatures can be below freezing with occasional snowstorms, sometimes severe, which may hamper your daily outing with your dog. You may need to plan some indoor games for exercise when severe winter weather arises.

Because Burnside is bordered on all sides by railroad tracks, residents of the area have dubbed Burnside 'The Triangle.'  There are some industrial zones associated with the railroad tracks, especially on the west side, that are not particularly pedestrian-friendly corridors. Residential areas, however, are quiet and well-treed and there are several open, undeveloped natural areas in Burnside where you can run with your dog and maybe play a game of fetch if your dog has a good off-leash recall.

Homes in the area tend to be generously sized ranch-style homes with large setbacks, lawns, and trees. Residential areas have grass strips between roads and sidewalks for pedestrians and their dogs to enjoy strolls. Remember to clean up after your dog so you stay popular with the neighbors! Some busier streets and commercial areas have more traffic and paved parking lots where vehicle traffic can be an issue. Watch for traffic in these locations.

The Lorraine L. Dixon Park is located on the western border of Burnside. This long narrow-shaped park parallels a couple of city blocks and has a walking trail for locals with dogs to enjoy. There are also picnic areas, open lawns, and a playground located here.

There are several undeveloped natural spaces in Burnside that are excellent locations to walk and play with your dog in the neighborhood. Also located in the community, along Greenwood Avenue, is a sidewalk that is bordered by trees on the west side, providing a mini greenway through this commercial district. This avenue makes a shady walking location especially in the evening for pedestrians and their pets to enjoy their daily walks.
