Wag! Walkers know Gage Park

Gage Park is a quiet section in Chicago's South Side, made up of mostly working-class families living in bungalow style homes. The streets are like many other areas of Chicago, lined with plenty of shady trees and strips of grass along the way to divide the street from the sidewalks. Pet supplies and groomers are within easy driving distance and there a number of restaurants and stores in the area for you to enjoy.

There are two parks in the community, both of which are great places to take your family friend for a romp in the grass, play a little frisbee, or maybe some fetch. Keep in mind that the weather here is quite hot and humid all summer long. You should plan your walks for early in the morning or later in the evening. Winters here tend to be very cold and walks will be limited depending on the temperature and the amount of snow on the ground.

What is the terrain like in Gage Park?

Chicago's South Side, including Gage Park, tends to be pretty flat overall. While this might be great for those who are elderly or just getting started going for walks, in time, it may not be enough of a challenge. Still, it may be a great place for beginners or those with disabilities who require only small amounts of activity.

If your goal is to get in some serious exercise during your walks, you can either add to the distance you both walk or hop in the car and head out of town in search of some hilly terrain. Gage Park is not truly a concrete jungle as the streets are lined with grass strips filled with shady trees. This shade can make walking in the summer much easier thanks to the coolness provided. One unusual feature of the area is the Socorro Sandoval Elementary school that seems to be built in the middle of Senka Park.

How many greenways are there in Gage Park?

Living in the Windy City conjures up images of a concrete jungle straight out of a Martin Scorsese movie. But in reality, the Gage Park area of southwestern Chicago offers plenty of green space with two dog-friendly parks and streets that are lined with grass and trees. During the summer months, you can swing by several different eateries for a cold drink. Bring a water bowl for your pup and most will give you a water cup to fill it!

Both local parks, Senka and Gage, have doggy play areas where you can take your pup and let them make new playmates. Gage Park is enormous and has plenty of grass for your dog to run around on. If this is not enough, just a few miles to the south is the South-Region Chicago Park with a fishing lagoon, golf course, numerous playing fields, and plenty of green grass for your dog to play on.
