Wag! Walkers know Greater GraCrossing
Greater Grand Crossing sits on the site of a former railroad crossing between two rail lines where, back in 1853, a feud between two railroad companies led to a nasty crash between the two lines that included the death of 18 people. As a result of this, trains on both lines were required to stop at the junction and before long, a community sprang up around the area. Most of the city is given to residences, many of which were built back in the 30s with very little new construction since this time. Over the course of time, the demographics in the area have changed, and the population dwindled.
Today, it is considered an affordable alternative to many of the surrounding villages but continues to suffer from higher crime levels. Walking with your pup during the daylight hours presents no particular safety issues, but you must be aware of what is going on around you.
What is the terrain like in Greater GraCrossing?
What can be said of the ground in Greater Grand Crossing that hasn't already been said of the entire Greater Chicago Area? The land here is typically flat as only the Midwest can be. The area is split in three by I-90 and I-94 along with several rail lines running alongside I-90. When it comes to walking your dog in the community, you have to be creative if you want your walks to be challenging. Just because there aren't any hills to add extras challenges to your stroll doesn't mean you can't add your own challenges. Try taking different routes, varying the time of day you go out for your walks, and go for a blend of long and short walks. Hills and grassy terrain can make for excellent hiking conditions, but when you don't have them to work with, you have to make the best of what you have.
How many greenways are there in Greater GraCrossing?
The Greater Grand Crossing community is home to several small parks, two larger parks, and the Oak Woods Cemetery. Auburn Park Lagoon offers a large lagoon for you and your pooch to explore including the trail that goes all the way around the lake. The park sits in the middle of a residential area but makes a great place to relax and explore on a warm spring or summer day.
Both Grand Crossing and Adams Park in the southeast corner of the area offer plenty of grass for the two of you to play on along with trails to explore and shady trees to enjoy. If a trip to the beach is more along the lines of what you are looking for, the beaches and parks along the shoreline of Lake Michigan have a lot to offer with loads of room for the two of you play and burn off a little excess energy.
