Irving Park is on the northwest side of Chicago. It is bordered by the Milwaukee Road railroad tracks on the west and the Chicago River on the east. This historic neighborhood is named after the American author Washington Irving. The homes within this neighborhood are diverse, encompassing Victorian designs as well as farmhouses and bungalows and elegant Queen Anne homes.

Due to its location convenient to travelers coming to and from Chicago, this neighborhood has served as a farm and a tavern, then being developed into a suburban community in the years after. Many homes in this neighborhood are still historic and it is considered a historic neighborhood.

This neighborhood is almost entirely residential but convenient amenities for your dog are nearby including training centers and grooming studios. Along North Elston Avenue, there are a variety of small restaurants and cafes, some with pickup or outdoor seating for you to enjoy while walking your dog.

The tree-lined streets of this neighborhood are very pleasant to stroll down with your dog on a loose leash. Bike-friendly roads and paths throughout Irving Park make it a lovely neighborhood for riding a bike with your dog. Paths tend to run north and south, with North Elston Avenue serving as a diagonal connection between them, allowing you to access all of this neighborhood comfortably by bicycle.  

The area is mostly flat, with long straight blocks that are easy to navigate. Most streets are residential, with North Elston Avenue being the exception and the place to go if you are looking for a bite to eat. You may want to vary your walk by training intermittently throughout so that your dog will have a more interesting and compelling experience on each outing.

If you are willing to take a car trip, you can head towards the River Park dog-friendly area where your dog can safely play with her friends.

Walking through much of this neighborhood feels like being in a park with the tree-lined streets, plenty of grass, and gorgeous architecture. There are a couple of small local parks within Irving Park to vary your walking experience and get a chance to play a game of ball or fetch on a leash with your dog.

Independence Park has several grassy areas along with tree cover around a central ballpark. The Athletic Field Park offers slightly less area for you and your dog and it's mostly ballpark, but if you are near the southeast side of Irving Park you may find this little area enjoyable.

For the most natural exploration with your dog, head towards the river. A little bit south of Irving Park, the North Branch Riverwalk runs along the water for a great walk with your dog.

You can follow this walkway for miles up the river and across West Addison Street bridge to access more walking on the other side.
