Wag! Walkers know Magnolia Glen
Magnolia Glen is a small, largely residential neighborhood located in the North Side of Chicago. A relatively small community, Magnolia Glen is home to a medium-sized park with a playground, a high school, and a public library. There is also a small strip of businesses, including restaurants, bars, hotels, and churches, primarily located on the east side of the neighborhood. Most residents in Magnolia Glen reside in standalone houses or small apartment complexes.
Located in the Midwest, Chicago and the Magnolia Glen neighborhood experience all four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Average temperatures range from 18° - 84°F, but can also get warmer or colder depending on the months! Magnolia Glen is only a few blocks away from Lake Michigan, so during the winter months, the neighborhood can experience sudden and heavy snowfall due to lake-effect weather. You'll want to dress in the appropriate gear for cold weather walking in order to keep you and your pup safe.
What is the terrain like in Magnolia Glen?
Magnolia Glen has a nice balance of both artificial and natural terrain. For only being ten miles outside of downtown Chicago, there are a surprising number of large trees and green spaces in this neighborhood.
Walks in Magnolia Glen should be easy! This neighborhood is mostly flat, with only the slightest increase in elevation. Most of the neighborhood has well-maintained sidewalks, making your daily walks safe and enjoyable. These sidewalks are also usually lined with patches of grass, giving your dog an alternative to walking on hot concrete during the summer months. Additionally, as it is a largely residential community, pedestrians should not have to deal with high-speed or congested traffic. The only exception may be North Ridge Avenue, which is the four-lane road that borders the south edge of Magnolia Glen. You'll want to be cautious near this area and keep an eye out for traffic in order to ensure that you have a safe walk.
How many greenways are there in Magnolia Glen?
As a largely residential neighborhood, Magnolia Glen has plenty of green spaces! Most of the residential areas have wide sidewalks, plenty of trees, and large grass areas lining the roads—great for a quick pit-stop on your daily walks. Additionally, for dog owners, most residences seem to have good-sized front and backyards for your furry friend’s enjoyment.
Magnolia Glen is also home to a medium-sized public park known as the Senn Playlot Park, most of which is occupied by a playground and a community garden. There is also a very small greenway on the south side of the neighborhood called the Edgewater Gateway Garden. However, in front of the local high school, there is a large grassy area with plenty of trees, shade, and paved paths. Unfortunately, there are no enclosed dog parks or runs in the neighborhood, so while in public, your pet will have to be leashed at all times.
