North Park is a community located ten miles north of Downtown Chicago and is home to Northeastern Illinois University and the North Park Village Nature Center. The area includes single-family homes, row houses, the exclusive Sauganash Woods community, and plenty of green space. To find the nearest dog park or pet supply store, you will need take a short trip in the car. There are a number of tasty restaurants in the area that are definitely worth checking out. 

For those of you who are new to Chicago, the weather here runs from one extreme to the other. Winters offer weeks of snow, ice, and below freezing temperatures, especially when the lake effect winds blow. Summers can be filled with hot days of endless sunshine that are perfect for spending the day hiking along the river. Not only is this a great place to take your pup for a walk, but it's a great area to raise a family.

The terrain varies here from wide open grass and woods to gridlocked row housing and mostly sidewalks and streets. What you get depends heavily on which area of the community you live in. No matter where you live, you are within a short walk or drive to a park for you to enjoy exploring together. 

If you must stick to walking on the pavement, there is something you should know. When the summer temperatures reach 80 to 85°F, the temperature of the pavement can be in the range of 135 to 145°F. Temperatures this high can burn your pup's paws and cause some severe discomfort. To avoid this, you can take your walks in one of the nearby parks or cemeteries. The parks all have some form of trails running through them along with plenty of grass to run around on and space to burn off a few extra calories.

North Park is filled with green space ranging from two cemeteries to Gompers Park and the North Park Village Nature Center that covers 46 acres. The center is a nature-preserve with multiple trails to hike on, a birding area filled with a variety of birds, and an educational center dedicated to teaching children. To the south is Gompers Park, a 39-acre park that straddles the river and offers athletic fields and trails running deep into the woods. If you stick to the trail running along the river, you will eventually find yourself in Forest Glen Woods and further into the Thaddeus S. "Ted" Lechowicz Woods. 

Being able to walk around the woods should give you enough trails to keep you and your pup busy for years. These parks are also an excellent place for you and your entire family to spend time having a picnic and enjoying a sunny Chicago summer day.
