Princeton Park was built in the early 1940s as a multi-family home community for low-income families. It was targeted at the African American community and was the first well-established African American community in Roseland. It is a small community in the Roseland area on the Northwest side of Chicago.
This neighborhood is home to the Turner-Drew Elementary Language Academy which is located in a large oval shaped clearing made by a loop of S. Princeton Ave. Multi-family homes are clustered around the central courtyard as well, while the rest of the neighborhood is made up of single-family homes in rows.
Most businesses are clustered along W. 95th St. Just southwest of Princeton Park, the R. Lewis Dog Training Center can provide quality training for your dog. Walking through Princeton Park is generally pleasant. The part of the community that has row housing is attractively landscaped with mostly young trees and shrubs. The buildings are set back from the street behind grassy yards and traffic is not heavy, so you can walk your dog on a loose leash here. The terrain is flat and easy to navigate.
The area of Princeton Park that is made up of single-family homes is also pleasant to walk through, but the tendency of front yards to be fenced means that this isn’t as good of a place to allow your pup freedom on the leash. Several miles west, the Dan Ryan Woods has lots of alluring forest for you and your dog to wander through. Plenty of grassy fields give you a break from the inner city and some areas are sheltered so you can have a pleasant sunny space and escape from the constant Chicago wind.
Southeast of Princeton Park, the Van Vlissingen Prairie can give you variable terrain from forest to prairie and marshy areas. For more marsh, you need only go south to the Railroad Marsh and Big Marsh Park. Lake Calumet is a great open-water space for you to enjoy with your dog.
