Wag! Walkers know Printer's Row (Printers Row)
Printer's Row may be one of the most eclectic neighborhoods in the Greater Chicago area. The community gets its name from the number of printers and publishers that called the area home during the latter part of the 19th Century. It was also home to Dearborn Station before it was closed down. While there are remnants of many of the old publishing and printing businesses in the area, many of the buildings now house large apartment complexes.
While shopping in the area can still prove to be fun with several bookstores and art galleries to buy from, this part of the city is mostly concrete with a tiny park not fit for dogs in the middle. Thankfully, Dearborn Park is just on the other side of West Polk St., giving you somewhere to take your pooch out for a stroll in the fresh air. Further to the east and in the distance are Grant Park and Lake Michigan.
What is the terrain like in Printer's Row (Printers Row)?
The terrain in Printer's Row is as flat as the rest of the area with little in the way of green space. There are a few trees along the sidewalks, but no grass for your dog to walk along. The only green space in the community is the Farmer's Market. The paths might be a better place to go for a walk, but the days are typically very busy, making walking your dog more challenging than it needs to be. A better option would be to walk across the street and take either S. Park Terrace or S. Plymouth St. to the park.
If you want to walk a little further, there are several open areas of grass along the South Branch of the Chicago River including Ping Tom Park. Your best bet is to make use of the various green spaces nearby or be prepared to take your pup over to the parks along the shores of Lake Michigan.
How many greenways are there in Printer's Row (Printers Row)?
It can be hard to imagine finding any amount of green space in an area like Printer's Row. This section of town is a virtual concrete jungle with very little in the way of grass or trees. Fortunately, there are plenty of parks within walking distance for you and your pup to explore. Over on the banks of the South Branch of the Chicago River is the Ping Tom Park/Ping Tom Memorial Park which covers several acres and mostly consists of grass, trees, and plenty of trails for the two of you to wander around on.
To the east is Grant Park, an area which has acres and acres of grass, ball fields, trees, the Buckingham Fountain, and, of course, plenty of room for the two of you to do more than stretch your legs. Soldier Field sits within the same park complex, giving you a few options for exploration during your daily outing.
